Would it help if I had lived in the UK for several years and have visited there numerous times?
On that topic, I don't suppose you have any members from the area around Carterton (RAF Brize Norton)? Would love to see how the place has changed since I moved away in 1981.

I am an amateur who would like to make the jump to semi-pro so I can justify spending money on equipment
In an attempt to expose myself (pun intended) to more of the world of photography, I was searching around for good photography forums and found yours.
I am in Charlotte, NC and am planning on specializing on the unusual. There are a million wedding and portrait photographers and a half a billion semi-pros advertising their hack photo skills on CraigsList, but I don't want to be one of them.
I have an "in" with the biker world and am fascinated by the grittier, urban, tattooed, pierced, alternative lifestyle photography and want to move in that direction.
