Are the camera companies ripping us off with all these new cameras they keep bringing out? is the picture quality that we all strive to get that much better or are we just suckers for having a new model no matter if the only change is a restyle? I do wonder as the releasing of new models seems increasingly quicker. I do wonder if we are just all getting sucker in to fuelling the big company customer war and upgraded models are being upgraded just for this sake and not in the interest of the consumer. Rant over

Im still using a 20d and have no plans to upgrade anytime soon :p

I think you're only suckered if you think that buying a newer camera will make you a better togger !

I still have my 350d and think it's great and having seen shot with the 400d can't see any difference. I still have all my cameras right back to my zenith E and all are working great :D I don't suppose these new digital camera's lifespan will even come close to that. ;)

It is entirely possible but, if you compare the 450D to the 400/350D there have been some noteworthy improvements.
The D300 also has some desireable new stuff noteably, super duper lcd, lower noise, more pixels, 14bit depth and higher frame rate.
The real nice one is the 100% viewfinder, I've lost count of how many time I've wasted 20% of the frame trying to get a subject well within the borders.

Well I doubt I will need to upgrade mine as its unlikely I will outgrow it, and there are a lot of people with lesser spec cameras who get a lot better pictures than I do.

I think a lot of people who have the finances do upgrade so that they can have the latest of whatever make and look good - does not make them a better photographer though.

I suppose in one way its good because it mean there will be some decent cameras coming up second hand at affordable prices for people starting out, but yes a lot of people do get suckered in to whatever model has just been launched.

Just buy one of these and you'll not have to upgrade for a few years:

It's only 23k :p

I take on board some of the changes are pretty neat but are they worth devaluing your present camera for. We all like new I don't doubt that but the upgrade from the 30d to the 40d looked good but at the end of the day, apart from a few gimmicks does it preform that much better. I guess you pay your money and makes your choice. When you look at the 300D it's all but pretty much dead and I can only see the whole replace system getting worst like the pc market. I also feel they could put a lot more into the upgraded cameras but don't due to the next round of enticements coming to a store near you soon.
I am of the breed yesterdays technology for yesteryears prices. ;)

As i just posted in another thread, if they can make some more money, they will!

I have been looking at some second hand D200's, makes me wonder whether I should hang on another 12 months and wait for the D300 to drop in price, but then again in 12 months time, a D400 will probably be on the shelves

As a pro I am quite keen to see a new model every 12-18 months, as I run 2 body's I can upgrade to the latest model and retire the oldest one. This isn't because I want the latest and greatest features, etc. but because I simply wear a body out after 2 years shooting on average 5k frames a month for the main body and half that for the backup.

As a amateur I don't think there's any need to upgrade with each model and a body should last 2 or 3 rounds of new releases. The question really is why people are upgrading but that applies to lots of retail markets - mobile phones, computers, TVs, etc. and generally the answer is the same - gadget mania ;)

Look at some of the lengths people will go to with AV gear - gold plated digital cables (so the 0 & 1's are crisper no doubt) and I remember one story of a guy who went around his listening room and lined up all the screw heads so the slots were horizontal :bonk: :cuckoo:

Sadly there's a culture of enjoying the technology more than the music/images/film/etc

I can't believe you people, it's obvious a newer camera will take better pictures.
Plus they look so much cooler than the old ones.
I hear the next Canon incarnation will have an admiring glances meter.
Cameras are like puppies, they're just for Christmas, then you can discard them a few months later and get a better one.

I will upgrade my 20D the day it goes to camera heaven.

Even when I get the 5D I will not let go of old faithful:D

Just kidding, the 20D is a great camera, sadly, when it goes claws up, you are unlikely to be able to get spares for it and the cost of repair will most likely be more than it's worth.

The latest pentax can hit 8 envious scowls a second!:D

Pretty much the same with everything though, Alby
those marketing chaps and chapesses have a lot to answer for, :bang:
I recently had to buy a new TV
these digital HD thingies are bloody expensive :'(
a when a "normal" one would have done just the same
could I find one?....

You're right though, especially since cameras have now gone the way of computers:bang::bonk::D

I have learned one or two tricks since I bought my 350 hot off the press though:lol:.

Nope, if you slice them thin enough-a puppy will last till the new year

Totally agree :)

I was looking at getting an Olympus E-510 as my first digital SLR. Found a good price etc.

Then by off chance went to the local comet and got the last E-500 for £199 back in nov.

I'm more than happy with it, even though I could have got a newer model (although well over twice as much!)

I'm sure I read somewhere that Hasselblad had stopped production on that model now and a new range is coming soon...

to be fair, we are in the UK... we get fleeced on everything!

That's not true, what about the TV license or car tax?
Both great value for money.

Yes, in theory they are. But they charge you for both and then fine you if you watch one whilst driving the other. :shake:

Back to topic...
Over on POTN back in September with the release of the 40D....what a state people were in. Posts complaining that the Aussies were having theirs 20 hours ahead of the US due to the same release date. Complaints that UPS were due before noon and still hadn't arrived by 1.30pm. People admitted to driving 250 miles to pick it up on launch day.
All of this may sound a little sad to some or most of us but you can only admire the mindset that has been injected by the marketing guru's.
Is there anybody here who can honestly say that their camera became their limitation before the release of the next model?...I doubt it.

Bob

Mr LL was in a state of shock for sometime after the release of the D300 - I said 'No'! With the exception of the improvement in ISO noise, there was nothing about it that made me feel I needed to upgrade from the D200, which as Bob points out, I have certainly not outgrown in terms of its features, I still haven't used them all [does anyone?]

Are we being fleeced? Only if we let ourselves be is the answer. The model war will continue unabated whilst consumers demand ever bigger and better versions, but unless you have a money tree in the back garden, then its not really worth jumping on that band wagon unless you really feel you cannot do anymore with the model you have or its showing signs of wear and tear and actually needs replacement IMO. I have a reached a stage where I want to spend money on really good glass that will last instead :D

cameras are no different to anything else in life technology improves and things get better if they didn't we would still be shooting with film, do we need the latest?? most of us no but when you have had your old camera for a few years and it fails I bet no one is going to go and buy the same model again
some people will always want the latest and best I was one of these people when I did motocross every year I had to have the latest bike then put on a better exhaust, suspension ect, did it make me any better?, when I took up golf I had to have the best clubs did that make me a better player?. I haven't quite gone this far with cameras and I try to get my kit as new but second hand,

Bob, I remember that and you only have to look at christmas time when the kids want that special toy of the year that the big companies have advertised as the must have only they are not able to meet demand. I bet they all have a great laugh watching us sucker public running and ringing around like headless chickens to please our egos for our kids

Nope, you have failed, nice try tho...
You could just as easily buy a new copy of your existing model, because you don't want the latest and greatest features, thats just a fortunate coincidence:thumbs:
I dont need an excuse, I just buy what I want/end

TV license isn't. All that money going to Jonathon Ross for not being especially entertaining? A huge "news" operation that sacks people as soon as they start reporting anything that goes against the government approved message?

Nope, not doesn't register on my "value for money" scale.\

They do some astonishing work, and it's good value for things like Planet Earth etc, but I resent paying to be served propaganda masquerading as news. Imagine if all the license fee was well spent! </dream>

I'd like to apologise at this point as, my response was intended to be one of light heart.
I will remember to use the emoticons in future!:)

When and if, I learn to use my D200 to its potential, I may upgrade to a D3.However, the D3 may be an antique by the time I have acquired such skills......:bonk:

If you're going to be upgrading your puppy and/or camera anytime soon can I have your 'old' one please? lol

I've heard they will have a mirrored chrome body so both the photographer and the subject can admire themselves without turning on the camera, it increases battery life a great deal.:naughty:
