Hi there -
I am on the verdge of purchasing one of those Canon remote controls for my trusty 400D.

Do any of you use them ? And what are the pros and cons ?

Any feedback will be greatfully received. :)

If you need to operate the camera remotely, accept no subsititute!

I recently bought the RC-1 Remote controller, approx £10 i think. Neat bit of kit, fits on the camera strap, has two modes, 2 second delay or instant. Ideal for all sorts of pics and cheap as well.

Well for wildlife you can stick your camera right next to the perch or hot spot and leave it there (as long as the animal isnt viscious !!!) and then take the shot from further away. I think thats a advantage

If you are doing any long exposures, a remote control is a must. You could use the timer, but the remote control lets you time when to open the shutter, and not a second or two after you press the shutter using the timer.

I got a compatible remote control on Ebay and saved quite bit, and it works fine. :)

i brought one yesterday and what good fun it is,

i would recommend the one i got which is called twin 1. it works wireless and on a wire so has best of both worlds. You can even shoot with it from 20m behind it which i know is better than the canon ones.

You MUSt have either a wired or wirless remote. The RC-1 is very useful, but you cant really beat a wired remote as the IR sensor is on the front of the camera. Great for self portraits but not really helpfully placed by Canon.

Sounds like Mark has found the ideal bit of kit

T4 cameras in swindon. it is awesome espically as it can be used from behind about 20m away. being wired also means if the wireless bit breaks ( i hope not) it will still be able to be used.

There seems to be 2 models available on the high street...
As I'm going to Jessops tomorrow, can anyone tell me the differences between:

Model numbers: RC-1 and RC-5

I know, for sure, that the RC-5 is compatible with the 400D but not sure on the RC-1.
I've just read the details for the RC-1 that appear on Jessops and it mentions compatibility with quote:
''EOS 30/33, 50/50E, 100,10, iX, 300V''
- but no mention of the 400D.

Can anyone throw any lite on that ? thanks...

@ 400duser -
My 400D was purchased last November from..............
Jessops (where else would u purchase your very 1st Digital SLR !
And the remote you found looks great - just read a write-up on it.

I have the 400d and the RC-1 works fine with it;)

SUPER - many thanks birdy961 !!!
That's the one I want to go with to be honest. :)

Now I just need advice on tripods

Not too sure on Tripod's, I got a Velbon sherpa 450 for about £65 and it seems ok to me, shall leave that one for others ;)

Ta...
That is at the VERY top end of my tiny budget ! (being an unpaid photographer right now) :bonk:
But I will look that up - ta.

I can see myself walking out of Jessops with one of their own brand tripods

I think you will be ok with a Jessops one for the first one, however I am no expert. At least it will give you a chance to try it without breaking the bank. No doubt someone on these learned forums could point you in the right direction

I have the Velbon Ultra Maxi f. It's at the top of your budget but some points to consider:

- It is very light (approx 2lbs max).
- It folds down very small 36cm without head, 42cm with.
- It has a good minimum and a good maximum height.
- It comes with a good soft carry case in the price.
- Has a very good 4 way adjustable head.
- Has a very good quick release mechanism.
- Legs are very easy to extend and very quick to extend.

Even if you can't stretch to this one, these are some of the things to thinks about.

It's better, in my view, to stretch and buy good once rather than compromise and end up buying twice. It's approx £65 on Amazon.

Thankyou for the info Defiance !

Man, I thought I'd learnt so much over the past 8 months since I quit the office job to chase the photographic 'dream'.
BUT, since joining this forum yesterday I've doubled that knowledge already ! ! ! :D:lol:

Yeah - you're right - I did, originally, have a budget of £30  - however, the hubbie's had a 'good week' - so that budget is going up ! We sat talking about putting a grands worth of equipment (that could be my only source of income) onto a £25 tripod :embarrassed: then thought better of it !

Also - WHERE do you guys buy most of your equipment ?
I'm relying on Jessops -

If you want value for money, I'd go anywhere but Jessops personally.

You can save a lot of money buying from online stores, and even more on Ebay. Depends what you want, and what you're most comfortable with. :)

Hey Alison, don't rely on Jessops as they are very expensive.

I have purchased all my stuff from Kerso, a member on here. Fabulous prices, superb service, and a jolly good chap. He is very highly regarded by all the membership on here and you could end up saving a shed load of money.

I've also purchased some superb kit from Chillimonster and DiddyDave on here too. You've done good by joining up here Ally.

My remote control is quite good, you can control more than just the shutter release but it only has a range of about 3-4 feet.

Big thumbs up:thumbs: for remote. I brought a RC-1 from Canon Bob and I love it.

Yeah, they're charging top dollar aren't they - I've hunted down a VERY good second hand shop in Camden and one in Soho that seem reasonable.

I think it's my best move so far ! I can't begin to tell you how much I've learnt so far.
