Are Optech Straps really that good?

Yes
I'm finding the standard strap on my 50D uncomfortable, had a look about and Optech straps seem to be good...

Is the neoprene actually durable? I don't want to buy a strap and then find it's falling apart after a year.

My first choice is the Black Rapid RS-7, but my second is the Optech Pro.....both are very comfortable and hard wearing!!

3 -4 years of hanging heavy cameras off them and getting the soaking wet and muddy and they are fine.
Not far of what I do then, if it can survive a mine/cave explore I'll be happy.

Seems I will be popping down to wex at the weekend and getting one.

Very happy with mine - I have the attachments on several different cameras, very easy to transfer strap between cameras.

I can sometimes barely believe people still continue to use the standard Nikon/Canon straps when neoprene straps are available and very reasonably priced.

The only damage I've had to one is when it got chewed halfway through by rats. They only chewed the neoprene though and the webbing strap that runs over the top would be plenty to hold a camera even if the neoprene gave ;)

I have an Op tech strap that I bought about 19/20 years ago that I used to carry a Nikon F4s around with I then transfered it onto my D7000. It was used up until last year when I decided to splash out and buy a TP op tech strap, I can't recommend them enough!!:):)

Same here still got them, but swap over to Blackrapid last year, which I now Perfer :)

Blimey they really are popular, which model is the one to go for?

Well that's where the fun starts!

There are so many to choose from.

As in the post I referenced earlier I loathe straps hanging off of cameras so the quick-disconnect Uni-Loop system works for me where with one strap for example I can clip into any of my camera bodies, either of my two big lenses, any of my camera bags, lens cases, binoculars etc.

My main strap is the Super Classic Strap - Uni-Loop in Nature/Camo although these seem to be difficult to obtain in the UK ncurrently as the new distributor doesn't import them!

A close second (if you prefer a strap to a sling) is the Super Classic - Pro Loop which still has the Uni-Loop connectors just fitted further up the strap either side of the padded neck part which means you have longer 'straps' hanging off the camera with which to plug the disconnects into.

See here;

Their Utility Strap - Sling is also good as is their Dual Harness but it depends on what you want exactly.

Hope that helps?

I like the uni-loop connectors as they are short, but would want the pro strap too, lucky you can buy the uni-loop connectors separately.

Still it's under £20 for both so it's not too bad.

The problem with using the Pro strap with Uni-Loops is that you end up with the camera literally tucked up under your chin! :)

Optech Pro .... £12 from Amazon.

I preferred the Optech as there's no metal to scratch your camera or lens whilst in the bag.

Not true, its long enough to wear across you shoulder with the camera on your side, same as the Sling.

OK then I'll rephrase that...you end up with the camera literally tucked up under your armpit! ;)

I stand by my previous post...if you use the Super Classic Pro with Uni-Loops the camera is almost directly attached to the padded neck part thus rendering it extremely short and tucked up under your neck or armpit depending how you wear it.

The Super Classic Pro without Uni-Loops by default would use its own extension straps which fit onto the camera and then clip into the Q/R at the padded neckpiece but this leaves two long length of straps hanging from the camera which for me was a no-no.

The Super Classic Uni-Loop (like the Utility Sling) will have longer straps attached (stitched) to the padded neck part which means the Q/R is attached much lower down the strap so when attached to the Uni-Loops it goes without saying your kit hangs lower.

That's one of the beauties of the Op/Tech IMHO...you can just about customise it to be anything you want but with that choice & flexibility comes complexity in deciding what might best suit your own needs.

I found that too, so bought some of the extension straps - job done. Could practically have the camera around my knees if I wanted!

They don't have any strap if you undo the clip at the end, basically a Uni-loop with an extender also I think?
