Are lenses for 20d and 450d compatible?

Sorry if it's a stupid question, just wanted to make sure before I buy a 20d for my husband.

Canon 300D - 450D, 20D - 50D are canon's small sensor cameras (i.e. 1.6x crop), the 5D is a Full Frame camera and the 1D series (1Ds Full Frame, 1D 1.3x cropped sensor) will work with all canon's EF lenses.

Canon's EF-S lenses are specifically designed for the smaller sensor camera's and will not work with the 1D series (FF or 1.3x) or 5D (FF) cameras.

and for historical reference I don't think EF-S lenses fit the Canon 10D or earlier cameras.

You are 100% correct, the 10D and earlier do not take EF-S. The 300D was the first that does.

Yes - but you might want to tell him that he needs to get L lenses for his body - then nick 'em for use on yours!
