Are cheap lightstands any good?

No
I just want to mount a couple of speed lights and umbrellas on them.

I found these and as you can see they are mighty cheap.

I'm in quite a tight spot financially and I'm just looking to set up a make shift home studio just for doing some family portraits in time for Christmas.

Well, you get what you pay for (if you're lucky)

But speedlights and umbrellas don't weigh much, so as long as you weigh them down well if using them outdoors they should be fine.

Different story though if using them with studio flash.

I've got a konig which looks exactly the same as the one you've linked to and it holds my flash and umbrella very well.....not sure if I'd trust it with much more on there though!!

I got one from 7dayshop.com for just £12, would trust it with a softbox/umbrella but nothing bigger.

Surely the eBay stands are the same as the Konigs? All the dimensions are the same plus you get a carry bag which 7dayshop don't supply.

I noticed that Flash In The Pan recommends the Konigs so if you want to be sure and don't care too much about having a carry bag, then buy the stand from 7dayshop.

Yep, don't buy them off ebay, it's more expensive, get them from that amazon link. Bargain.

They're fairly well built, come with a case, one of the few genuinely well priced things in photography really...

TBH the air cushioned stands I prefer cause i don't have good grip, but cheap ones are fine for a brolly and flash indoors.

I hate the interfit air cushioned stands we have, I need to jump up and down on them to get them down

they come with feet?

I know the canon foot has a thread on it

Oh yes, I remember when I first got my lighting stuff having to wait until I got one of those adaptors, had to wait for it to arrive from Hong Kong, very annoying :)

the Nikon flash just has a normal foot - slides in to the shoe on top of the camera
thanks

You will probably want an adjustable hotshoe mount..

Check out FITP thread in the advertisers section only £11

Bargain...
