Are cheap ExpoDisc any good?

There are times when I get into trouble with my whitebalance, and I have been thinking about getting an ExpoDisc for a while now.

I've found that good Expodisc (77mm sizes) retail for over £60 ....

.. while these people on ebay (who seem to be reputable by the feedback I got from TP)

have them for little over £4!

Seeing that this is to get my whitebalance correct, does it matter which of the two I get? Can anyone please give me some input on this.

An old tip I learned at POTN was to use an old Pringles lid instead, has to be the older version as the new ones are see through!

Have you tried using any grey cards? This may give you a better results for a fraction of the price.
 
Or shoot in Raw and adjust if needed at PP.

Thanks for all the feedback, I particularly love the idea of the Pringles cover .. though I am not too sure it is the right size for my most commonly used lens, at 77mm!

That aside, I much prefer to get the shot right at the camera and limit any pp. As for the grey card, I've not used one and I am not too sure which is the easier way to go? With the grey card, it has to be held at the point where my subject is .. something not all too practical, especially as I shoot landscape!
 
The linings and dividers of all Lowepro bags are 18% grey, whether by luckor design. I often meter of this surface if I'm in a tight position.
 
You can get some white balance lens caps on Ebay for about £3 delivererd.

They work well.

This is good to know, thanks; but again, how easy and practical would it be to use this if I am shooting landscape?

That's what I am talking about .. how good are these compared to the ones that are 10x as expensive?

We always hear the phrase, you get what you pay for; by that, would these chapo WB lenscaps be just that .. .. cheap and poor, or would they provide just as good a reading as their more expensive cousins?
 
They work very well.. actually I found the D300 has ****poor WB so I got a one of those to help the indoors WB.

All the EXIF should be in those, so you have a nose.

Don't pay 10x more - in fact, don't pay more than £3... :)
 
i have to say for £3 it might be worth a try rather than spending £60 because you are unsure:shrug:
 
Yup, it seems the £3 version are the ones worth investing in :thumbs:

Just bought one! Thanks folks I did consider an expodisc but you just saved me a few pennies :)
 
I am only amature compared to you lot but if I do need to adjust wb ect i open my white kitchen door and shoot that as its grey without the fluoresent light on and seems to work and cost nothing

But isn't that a bit too hard to use and carry on a hiking trip :p :shrug: :p

Bet its a pain the butt carrying your kitchen door around in you camera bag;)

NO simply remove door from cupboard but remember to leave hinges on cupboard not door and it goes into your rucksack where lappy goes but DO not REPLACE DOOR WITH laptop later its expensive and you will cry no matter how big and butch you may think you are
 
Use a sheet of A4, photograph it and take set your camera to custom WB. Suprising just how often the camera gets it wrong.

I always shoot in RAW but still prefer getting it right when shooting to avoid longer at the computer.
 
A sports tog I do the odd bit of work with bought one for his indoor work, used it once at a new gym with brand new lights, and the camera got better results on AWB than he did using the expodisc!!

Soz had to say it lol but great advice for people like me who cant pay the money for things like that

how is the wb set for everyday use like indoors, outdoors ect just to get decent shots ...not stunners just everyday shots .

By the way I set mine on the sky
