Are any of England, Scotland, Wales or N Ireland Countries, or just part of 1 (UK)

Also, the British Isles is a geographical name (non-political) of the United Kingdom of Great Britiain and Northern Ireland plus the offshore islands which include the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands!

It could be argued, I suppose that Wales is actually a principality and Northern Ireland is a province, but I see them as countries! :)

so there's more than one correct definition of a country, but whichever you use, our nations wouldn't be classed as countries.

The UK government states that the UK is the union of 4 countries, but that doesn't have any international backing or meaning, and is more a statement to make the Scots feel better.

Great Britain is the only recognised Country...
Scotland and Wales used to be countries - the Scots signed that away and the Welsh were slaughtered until they did as they were told...

Just as Bavaria and Pomerania used to be countries, they are now part of Germany and Poland respectively...

If you want sovereignty, fine - we'll close the borders - just see how many people actually bother to apply for Scottish visas just to eat fried mars bars and stand around in the rain.

Apart from scenery and whisky what do you actually have worth bothering with?

Oh, and the oil is ours - we paid for it, developed it and paid the wages of those who brought it ashore...

Depends on how you define country, but as someone stated earlier in proper politics, ie between political scholars Im fairly sure states must be completely sovereign. Since Westminster has power over the devolved assemblies they are not completely sovereign and thus not countries. I also thought the Olympic board/committe/group/thaaaang said the 4 entities of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland couldnt compete individually as they are not fully independant.

People do get a bit vexed about all this but it is simple really.

Northern Ireland is the bit left over when we granted the rest of Ireland Independence, so no, it isn't a Country.

Wales was annexed by England in the 12th or 13th Century, so it is part of England, given a certain amount of Autonomy by a regional Assembly.

Scotland and England were two Kingdoms joined in a Union when the Monarch of each happened to be the same person. A bit of an unholy alliance but it has worked much better since we got rid of the Catholics.

QEII is known as QEII in all the countries of which she is Head of State, even though most of them didn't have a QEI. We let the Scots have Pillar Boxes without QEII on to humour them.

England, Scotland Wales and Northern Ireland have seperate teams in the World Cup because it was us that started the whole International football thing and in the early days if we had played as one team there wouldn't have been enough teams entered. Because of our contribution to the organisation, rather than our ability to play, that fact is still recognised.

Treble Bullocks! :shrug: I suppose 'we' are organising the Commonwealth Games in Delhi this year? 'We' appear to making a grand job of 'organising' the Olympics in 2012 - due the money that is being taken away from other projects UK-wide; including the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow (that's North of Watford by the way ;)).

Different Countires in my opinion, I class myself as Scottish. When I'm abroad I say i'm from Scotland and not the UK. We have our own government, albeit they do not have full control over the country but we are united under Great Britian.

A bit off topic... One thing that annoys me though, when Scotland win something, eg if Andy Murray wins on the Tennis. He is a "British person that wins it", yet if he loses, He is a "Scottish person that loses it".

Nothing wrong with saying you're from Scotland, nothing wrong with you being proud of it - but that doesn't make it a country. Just like if someone said they were from New York.

Nah, nonsense :) On our TV he's normally just referred to as the British no.1. Granted many English people might point out he's Scottish when he loses, but that's to be expected after he said that when England played football he always supports the opposition.

To be fair though that has not been happening as often over the past few years than say when David Coulthard was winning races of Colin McRae winning rallies (few and far between but they did happen).

Murray is often revered as Britain's no.1, but in the games you hear them say "Great point from the Scot" or more likely " and the Scot exits Wimbledon at the semi final stages again"

Personally speaking, I'm a Highlander for Scotland...it's great because if you are abroad in another country, you can easily convince them that there really is a creature called "The Haggis" which has long legs and bounds the glens and drinks at the lochs. Also we have superior whiskey.

A bit petty considering that comment was a an ongoing joke he was having with Tim Henman and the English media blew it out of proportion....but hey why let the facts get in the way of pettiness ;)

I do agree it's not as often but it does still ocassionally happen. Mainly with the media.

I agree with that too. The Scots and the English have always been like that with each other, the banter I mean. Andy was only having a bit of banter when he said it. Like everything else in life, there is always someone that it offends or upsets lol.

You're forgetting an English newspaper tried (when he was winning) prove that he was actually English, something to do with his granny having spent a week's holiday at Blackpool one year, or some other equally tenious link. :lol:

Mind you I suppose he's as much "their's" as those two other great "English" sportspeople - the Canadian Greg Rusedski and the South African Zola Budd. :lol:
