Are all IR remotes that bad?

Yes
bought a Shoot branded IR remote on ebay for my 5D2, but it's just terrible, only works a few inches from the sensor and almost completely useless in sunlight.

just wondering are they all that bad/useless? or it's just a case of cheap knock-off (buy cheap-buy-twice)?

if good ones are usable, which one would you recommend?

But why choose IR at all - are there special advantage(s) over radio controlled?

compactness for tourism/holiday.

I've already got Cactus V5, but I'm ditching that for Yongnuo Yn-622c eTTL. so that means for radio shutter releases, I'll need to take another bit of kit.

was hoping IR would do the job.

The pukka Canon RC6 is only £15 at Wex.

All IR remotes can potentially suffer if the camera is in bright direct sunlight but I've had no issues in "ordinary" light over distances of 15 to 20 feet.

Never had an issue with the Hahnel Giga T Pro II and is half the price of the Nikon/Canon equiv.

The mini Nikon remote is indeed good, despite being quite irrelevant to you.

In the dark I can push 25 feet with the Nikon one, never gotten further than 5 feet in daylight though so I can't vouch much for that.

I use an IR remote a lot, instead of a cable release. V handy if the camera has an IR port as a lot of Canons do. And of course it's fine at very close distance used like that.

IR is not great at any range in daylight, though the main problem is it needs line of sight and that's not easy with the 5D2. On later camera's, the sensor is moved to a better position.

I had a really cheap one (£7?) from ebay that I used with my D40 without any problem at all. I think only ever used it indoors though, maybe that helped?

I use an uber cheap eBay special IR that cost £2.70, and I'm yet to be in a situation where it hasn't fired.
