I just had a bunch of cats pop up all over facebook in place of ads courtesy of Safari Ad Block which made me laugh. What april fools jokes have you had played on you/played on others today?
 
Photobox sent me an email telling me I can transfer my prints onto toast..

OK, so its not very funny but its the only sign of today being April Fools day that I have seen so far today.
 
Anyone noticed all the mentions of "C@n0n" being changed to Pentax?
^ the only way I could get the post to appear correctly!

There's the "new" Lomokino HD, which anyone that follows Lomography on FB will have seen this morning..
 
Oh, and the Kindle mode on Flickr.. any photopage, bottom right of the screen, two dots in a box. It might take a few seconds to kick in. I hope Flickr can retain this, because it has a nice lofi look and actually works suprisingly well with some images.

Lol, got a bit confused with the classifieds myself.. took a couple of seconds to realise that it was an aprils fools joke. Nice one, lol.

That's not an April Fool.. that was announced as a government proposal four-six weeks ago, all electronic communications (telephone, email, text messages, etc) to be retained by the provider (ISP, telco) for I think 12 months. I don't think forums were specifically mentioned but would probably be included.

Many a true word is said in jest - Telegraph article here from 18th February.

The bad guys will have a way around that in no time so big brother will be watching the rest of us even more. The only thing George Orwell got wrong was the date (1984)
 
Isp, phone companies etc will already hold that information - they can for as long as the DPA will allow them and its certainly more than 12 months. This information can also be obtained from the providers with a court order so nowt any different really...

The proposed new legislation being discussed is very different to the current situation.. I suggest you read up on it.

Another creeping intrusion into civil privacy.

(and I don't give 2 hoots for the "if you've nothing to hide" crap)

I probably gave an impression that I am indifferent towards the database state... don't worry I'm not (I'm a member of NO2ID), and I am well aware that this country could well be headed in the direction of a covert fascist state.

I just think that this news of the government watching us is old news. Any of that information can be obtained as easily as anyone "up there" wants to and most of it is already held on file anyway.

I will do more research into it though, I was already seeing yesterday that ISPs are being told to install extra "black boxes" to facilitate this big brotherness, but I can't say I'm surprised. In 50 years I think we'll all be banking with, buying insurance from and shopping for all products through the one conglomerate that is government controlled to the extreme (see my earlier comment re: covert fascist state)... but that's just me.

Some people would say I'm paranoid, I'd say I'm a realist, as in my (very short) lifetime I've already witnessed things go way south with regards to civil liberties, and it can only get much worse.

But without a warrant they will be able to:
  • Know who you sent it to
  • Know when you sent it
  • Know the size of the file and some other non-content properties
  • Know all of the above about the emails sent and received by those that you have sent emails to or received emails from
And all of the above also applies to all phone calls (replace size of message by length of call) and text messages. And they want all that in real time.

The content is almost irrelevant. There's a huge amount of intelligence that can be worked out just from the patterns in communication. The only next steop that couold follow on from this is access to the contents without a warrant. They'll have everything else.
 
Everyone should just add bomb this or bomb that or other spook fodder to every communication. They'd be buggered! Or send cryptic messages about eagles sitting in the bathroom or a man with a fish has mown his lawn.

It would be total childs play to make an app that encrypted all such communication with multiple transmission paths. In fact, you could just use skype. That is already completely secure and you can't eavesdrop.

GCHQ exists to protect the security of our nation, therefore their activities are all security related, and as the Government never comment on security matters they won't have any awkward questions to answer about warrants that weren't obtained will they? So, as long as they have the technology to read emails/texts there will be nothing to stop them doing it.

And just how difficult will it be for them to obtain warrants anyway?

Considering it's "the guvvamunt", not very difficult at all, which is why this new "development" really doesn't phase me. If they want to get the lowdown on someone for whatever reason they already can.
