Hi guys

Hope this is the correct sub-forum to post this one in (wasn't sure if here or the Business one was most appropriate. Anyway..). I just got contacted over Flickr (in Spanish! Thank you Google Translate :) ) by someone wanting to use one of my photos on a tourism website for a town in Spain. Not a particularly good photo IMO but anyway! (Here it is)

I've never thought about any of my very amateur photos being used anywhere, and just wondered what is the normal way to respond to such a request? I'm nowhere near good enough to get into trying to sell images, but it would be nice to see one of my pics on a website just for the personal satisfaction of it, not a commercial thing.

Advice appreciated from anyone who know's the drill!

Cheers, Graeme

If you don't want to licence or sell it to them then just go ahead and give them permission. If you have a website then request a credit to you (your name) and a link to your website. Think of it as marketing.

They may ask for the hi-res version, if they do then they may want to print it in a publication. In that case I would charge a licence fee.

If you would like to let them use it for free.. just reply and say so. Simples.

If you reply and ask them how much they are offering for the use of the image I imagine the response will be the Spanish for, "I'm sorry, we have no budget. We felt that the pretsige of having your photograph on out website would be satisfaction enough. We will credit you."

At least, that's the rough response I get from people that ask for images posted on Flickr. Of course some folk just take them anyway without asking.

I just give them permission to put a link to my photo free as long as I can verify and there is a link back to my photo. Done 3 so far.

Sure he wrote to you in Spanish? That town is in Cataluña. I'd be very surprised if they'd pay anything. There's no money in the local government coffers.

Hi everyone, thanks for the replies. Yes it was in Spanish not Catalan. I replied and said they could use it with a photo credit back to me... Not heard anything back so will see what happens.

Cheers all, Graeme
