Apple have just announced details of their new mobile which will incorporate a phone, web browser and ipod in one device.

Will you be getting one and which users swear by apple on here anyway?

Hmmm some of the comments make for unnerving reading !

Music is stored on a 512 megabyte memory card and the numbers of songs on board is capped at 100 - even if a bigger capacity card is used.

"This is the first device in a series," said Carsten Schmidt, European manager for Motorola's retail operations. "There will be more coming with higher memory."

I think it'll be a success just because it is "Apple". That in itself will make it a hit.

Seems pretty decent. Wide-aspect screen (WQVGA 480x272 3.5" like the Sony PSP display).

If apple launched iPlague some people would still want it

That didnt work for their last attempt :D

Quite like the looks and style of this new attempt, unfortunately I can imagine the Apple pricing model will not be so forgiving, so I'll wait until its released before I go and order one ;)

the psp screen is excellent, its a shame sony went UMD instead of a nice HDD though...good job you can buy large memory cards and fit movies on them..

iphone? Nice idea, but not sure how well it will take off, multi-function devices can be a bit complex, which scares people off

Well I will probably end up getting one of these, my Archos gmini220 (20gb) mp3 player is getting a bit long in the tooth and I dont shy away from Expensive phones...

My last three phones have been top of the range Nokias (8800, 9210 and 8110) and ive always paid a premium for them and as a recent Apple convert I would have no issues trying out their efforts.

Im a little suprised the largest is only 8gb and I my hold out for the 2nd generation iPhone as id like to see a 20gb miniumum so im not effectively taking a step backwards in capacity. I suppose it entirely depends on which UK providers get there hands on them as I will not be using 3 or Orange after awful past experiances with both.

Also im sure the above mentioned screen resolution isnt correct, im sure its a 480x320 screen which is slightly better than that in the PSP... also its touch screen which the PSP isnt.

/me picks up whip and chair, beats Apple haters back into cages. Now that thats out the way, the iPhone is a fantastic product. The multi-touchscreen that we've all seen demos of showing the future of human interface design is real and being used just as we all hoped. That beats the interface on any device out there. It'll be on cameras one day. The ability to zoom in and out of photos just by moving your fingers closer together, brilliant. Sony are currently waving their 4gb touchscreen walkman phone around and the iPhone totally beats it. There is no other device on the market that is this advanced. It'll take everyone else a bit of time to catch up and when they do the iPhone 2 will be out.

Don't forget that when the iPod launched it was 5gb and ahead of its competitors. The iPhone is crammed full of cool toys. You should visit the site and watch the demos. You also have to remember how different the US / UK phone market is. When I was in Toronto so many people had Blackberrys. The two main phones there are Motorola and Blackberry devices. Lots of people there have a Blackberry phone and an iPod of some sort. They will jump at the chance to have a unified device.

i love my ipod i have to say, simple and very effective, loving that demo too!

It'll take more than a chair and whip to stop me moaning about apple. They are a nasty evil company that make microsoft look like a charity organisation.

Never before has sooooo much been taken from so many with so much absolute greed in the name of coolness.

That said, the products are amazing and my new macbook pro, which will be replacing my g5 tower and 12" powerbook is working out really well. Apart from freezing in windows lots, need to figure that one out.

:agree:

Have apple released anything officially? Alot of the images of the iPhone are fakes made by Apple fans (both of them!)

The thing is that as much as you (and I) might hate apple, if you use the products they are miles ahead of the competition.

The simple fact that I never wanted a mac and hate dealing with apple in any form but still love using them now, says alot about just how god the kit is.

What ruins them is the commercial and branding departments, the geeks who come up with the ideas and put the stuff together must be the greatest. Then again, perhaps not, if you're a creative genius perhaps it's more fun to be in hell than heaven..... as long as you only have to work there. ;)

Looks a great phone but will be very expensive, I have just ordered a new phone today the Sony Ericsson W950i

I just want a phone, in fact I don't even want that but people seem to think it's important to be able to contact me at the precise moment I join a roundabout.

If I want to watch a film I'll put on the TV. If I want to listen to music the HIfi thingummy gets switched on. If I want to take a photo I use my camera.

I hate these things with a vengeance, whoever makes them.

Nope nothing. In fact the Apple fans forced Apple's CEO, Steve Jobs, to give a 2hr Keynote speech in San Francisco last night about the fake iPhone. They, both of them, then hacked Apple's site and put up a page about their fake iPhone. These fans then got in touch with Cingular and got them to agree to partner with Apple about the fake iPhone. Major news companies around the world all fell for this joke too.

Others love them for the reasons you hate them. Train journeys for example. I plan to spend more time travelling and a video iPod would be quite nice.

ROFL! You can't get more sarcastic than that!

Yes, Nath. It's official. Considering that Steve Jobs was touting it about yesterday at CES (the biggest Consumer Electronics Show around).

Well it seems today that apple are getting sued for using the term "iphone" as another company (cant remember who) already took the name 7 years ago.

They apparently were told not to use it but went ahead and did...so now they either face huge costs to buy the name....or change the name of their product.

Ever used an Apple Mac computer? Easy as pie. Pretty sure the phone will be extremly user friendly too.

I don't want an ipod - never have never will. And I think cameras in phones are a waste of space, weight and money.

But I WILL be having one of these no matter the cost. A portable device like this AND it runs OSX. Just imagine - no more rebooting every day which you have to do with smartphones.

Ahh, ok. No need for the sarcasm douche :p

Zune FTW.

Apple should just go die.

Yup, it's that small company called Cisco :D

linky

I am largely a corporate user of all things computer/electronic so to date I have managed to avaoid Apple products despite trying to like them. I have a pal who is a musician and photographer and does some amazing stuff with his (rather expensive) mac booty. I also can name a senior exec in Apple US as a pal so can gain high level gen if I needed.

despite this i still do not own an Apple. Why? They use more chargeable propriety software than windows and despite protestations my business will run better and cheaper using Windows products. At home they look nice but unless you want itunes to be the boss and give up on Windows explorer (why not be allowed to use the shell in an OS?) then mp3 players such as iriver make better sense.

Sorry but as much as Apple looks sexy they are just another flavour of many and only the best if they do things better that you want them to do.

As for phones I left Nokia to go Sony Ericsson and will have to see something very impressive to swap away from these fine business/music phones. But if they do I will buy it, nothing surer!

All just my opinion of course :)

I had already posted a link to the official Apple site earlier in this thread you see :p By the way, there were no Zune users at CES, the biggest electronics event of the year. Haha!

You're going to have to keep your hands very clean to use one of those iPhones without it ending up looking tatty.

Apple seem to think they can do what they want and rip off any other company's ideas. Creative sued apple and won last year and now Cisco, maybe apple are not as clever as they want everyone to believe.

Douche?

Apple should just go die?

The iPods are one of the best MP3 players in the market, there is admittedly some stiff competition between Microsoft and Apple in the portable music player market, but it's obvious who's winning at the moment.

If the iPod's are so appauling, why do they outsell the Zune by at least 10:1. It's because the iPod is also visually appealing, rather than looking like a tacky piece of plastic, which the Zune does. Apples software package (iTunes) also appeals to the user, with many using it as their primary music player on their computer and not just a means of transferring files to and from the iPod.

There's been nothing but criticism about the software which Microsoft have supplied with their Zune, and it's also been said that the sound quality of the iPod is superior.

Apple win this battle, easily.

(By the way, the only apple product i own is an iPod, i'm a hardcore Windows user otherwise ;))

Also the iPod plug out sold the Zune on Amazon last year :D

Haha, exactly!

The Zune really has nothing over the iPod, and now with the iPhone Apple really are going to dominate the market i think. When the phone finally does go on general sale to the public, i know i'll be buying one :D (Hopefully, if i can get the money :|)

I'm sure nearly all modern mobiles allow this anyway.
So why should I buy the apple one?

itunes talks to my phone already too.

i used an apple for the first time before christmas, it seemed no easier to use than windows and suprise suprise against all the odds of being superstable and resistant to crashing it crashed while browsing the internet, infact this very site, not very indeering, and ill be sticking to windows.

ipods however, great looking and really easy to use, ive had mine for about a year and my girlfreind has just bought a creative zen vision:M which was released about the same time and the ipod completely eclipses it in terms of build quality, ease of use, visual appeal and the supplied software.

as for a phone, hmm, my phone takes pictures when i dont have my camera to hand and sends text messages and makes calls, it supposedly stores music as its a walkman phone but ive never had a use for it so havent tried, what does this iphone offer me over and above that?

Ive been using Macs since September last year... Ive had 1 crash in that time and that was when I was running WinXP under parallels... Other than that it has been running 24/7 and ive only had to restart my main Macpro for 1 or 2 firmware updates it.

Back to the iPhone, Ive not seen another mobile that offers 8gb of storage.. the closest ive seen is the Nokia N91 which is 4gb, has a poor interface and is rare as rocking horse poo.
Having not seen the iPhone, used the interface or actually got much of a clue of the UK retail pricing and likely deals its hard to say for sure it is going to be a good as hyped... but 1 thing for sure is I want one... so the marketing works.

To be honest i have a 60GB Ipod video, having a mobile phone that plays music is pointless to me ! Ok so it means i have to carry another device ! so what ! ;)

I certainly wont have an Apple Phone, much like i wont get Apple TV or anything else !

I buy things for the use i get out of them, not because of marketing !

And i have XP running on my PC it hasnt crashed once since it was built ! thats erm, ok its only a couple of months because i tried Vista last year. ;)
