Apple wins US court case over Samsung

Sorry, I must be missing something here, since when were we talking about multi million pound big business installations?

The majority of people running windows should try a new OS yes, they should also look around before buying their next piece of hardware. When they next upgrade yes, nothing to do with this year though. Most people don't upgrade every year though...

Why doesn't your warped logic apply to business?

Two points...

1. you need to start looking at other manufacturers kit. People that buy from just one manufacturer are strange, even if the argument is "they make the right stuff for me". Really? Exactly the right stuff? This is not an Apple specific thing, it's the same with other manufacturers, specifically some people I know and Sony. They make good kit but some stuff is better from other manufacturers...If you've made a lifestyle choice then...

2. You['ve had a significantly large number of failures of Apple products! Of all the electrical kit I've had I haven't had anywhere near that amount of issue with it! I'd also argue that several of those out of warranty replacements are actually requirements not good will. For example the Nvidia chipsets had a court order covering them (all manufacturers) and the batteries were a safety issue. They could replace them for free or you could probably take them to court... A lot of manufacturers that have had similar battery issues have also done the free replacement.

Apple kit and customer service is good, just I'm not sure your post really gives it the best light!

I am a component level service engineer and have been building computers for people since the 386/486 era. I've build my own machines since then (dozens of them) and would never consider buying a ready built machine other than a laptop normally. At the time I bought my Mac Pro you could not build one for less so it was actually cheaper to buy it than build a hackintosh with all it's inherent issues.

At this time I also run 3 home built machines plus a proliant server.

As to the failures.....

Mouse - had that been any other computer and I would have just binned it and bought another, it was over 2 years old and used heavily.

Batteries (5 of) - would not have been covered by any other manufacturer as 3 were 2+ years old and 2 were nearly a year old. Most manufacturers only warranty their batteries for 3 or 6 months!

Dead pixel - can happen to anybodies phones and was a new device. A lot of manufacturers would have argued about replacing that but not an issue.

Headphones - Again 9 month old headphones, would normally just get binned for a new pair but we were going there anyway so they replaced them.

2 x Power supply end falling off - These were 4+ years old NOBODY else would have replaced these and the user would just have bought another off ebay etc.

So that only leaves:

1 - Phone software issue (Replaced at about a year old with another one.)

1 - power button failure !!

1 - cracked case top (how many manufacturers would fix this!)

1 - failed motherboard (I think that this was an NVIDIA chipset fault)

Hardly an issue really over the space of about 5 years......

Lets see the NON Apple kit over the same time:

1 - Compusys laptop (left mouse button for trackpad fell off into case at 4 days old) = sent back under sale of goods act for Sony.....

1 - Sony Vaio laptop - PSU failure
1 - Sony Vaio laptop - SODIMM failed (out of warranty so replaced with a spare)

which was eventually replaced by:

1 - Toshiba laptop - PSU failure
1 - Toshiba laptop - PSU socket failure

I've had to buy new batteries for both the above laptops which were outside of the service life but WOULD have been covered by Apples warranty had they been Apple machines)

Own built PC.....

2 x failed hard drives (both seagate) - replaced under warranty.
1 x Generic 6600GT video card - failed (RAM chip fell off) - just out of warranty
1 x Sony DVD writer - stopped writing DVDs but worked with CDs - out of warranty
1 x Creative sound card
1 x Generic memory card reader
1 x 800w expensive PSU - failed out of warranty
1 x expensive wireless keyboard - failed for no apparent reason.

Proliant server

1 x failed CD writer
1 x failed HD (can't remember manufacturer now)

The point is that neither is totally failure proof. Apples customer service is particularly good (normally) and so most of the failures I have had have been sorted.

If we go back further than 5 years I had mainly Compaq laptops M800x2, M300 (I think).... Never had a fault with either over the space of about 3-4 years other than batteries and 1 hard drive.

Mostly had desktop machines before that and had few failures with any of it other than keyboards, mice and floppy drives !

What warped logic?

That people should try different things?

And because business relies on longer time scales than most consumers, not to mention training and fitting within an existing multi million pound system.

And obviously the important fact... We were talking about consumer products... Not Cisco routers or Server systems... Rebuying the same (slightly updated) machine again and again, then buying another product from the same manufacturer, usually because it is from the same manufacturer, is very different.

This also applies to the people that buy only Samsung Phones or are HTC guys...

There is a difference between failing and being unsafe, expanding a releasing gas is not a warranty issue, it's a safety issue. Was that one of the Sony made batteries that was recalled a few years ago?

At the time I bought my Mac Pro you could not build one for less so it was actually cheaper to buy it than build a hackintosh with all it's inherent issues.

Don't get me wrong, I know Apple kit isn't overpriced (mostly), however when you normally see a list of kit that long from just one manufacturer it normally only means one thing... People set in their ways, blindly going forward really annoy me, one of the big problems in the world IMO, but that's another topic entirely.

Isn't HTC also on the Apple radar? Probably the reason why HTC doesn't support mac users....

The batteries were all simple failures except the 17" Macbook pro ones which expanded and one gave off hot gas which burnt my leg slightly :D

The Sony Vaio was a seriously nice laptop in my opinion... It was quick, reliable, had firewire, PCMCIA ports (which I miss), a decent screen and it was very well built. Unfortunately it had to be replaced with something quicker so in came the toshiba.

I have been accused of being a Windows AND a Mac fanboy! which is daft as I use Windows, MacOS and Linux.

I absolutely HATE this blind stupidness that is fanboyism!!!! I hate that every time I go on Tom's hardware guide, which I used to enjoy, you just get a constant stream of STUPID IGNORANT MORONS who have no idea what they are talking about who slag off anything and everything Apple for no good reason other that it is Apple

AND

I hate that every time I go on Appleinsider, another site I enjoy reading, I get a constant stream of STUPID IGNORANT MORONS doing exactly the same thing the other way !!!

Its like two sets of football fans from one town trying to have an intelligent argument about the pluses and minuses of their respective teams which the other group of fans.

:bonk::bonk::bonk::bonk::bonk:

I wrote the Apple 400 top tips because I could. I didn't do a Windows one because every time I posted a tip it de-generated into silliness.

I currently run a new retina Macbook Pro with a silly spec than is ridiculously quick. I couldn't buy a Windows version because there isn't one. It will of course run Windows and is in fact the BEST Windows laptop money can buy.... I just prefer MacOS at the moment but all that might change if they continue to drag it closer and closer to IOS...... We'll see.....

....People that buy from just one manufacturer are strange....

I was just thinking this as I ordered a Canon lens to fit on my Nikon camera. Fingers crossed both manufacturers use the same lens mount.... ;)

I agree 100% :)

The same reason I bought the MBA, it was the best ultrabook out at the time, well actually it was the best reasonably priced "ultrabook" out at the time, the Sony Z beat it but for what I wanted it would have been about twice the price.

I was just thinking this as I ordered a Canon lens to fit on my Nikon camera. Fingers crossed both manufacturers use the same lens mount.... ;)

There are some exclusions in that. ;)

On the other hand *looks at sig*, just because you bought a camera from one manufacturer doesn't mean your next camera has to be from the same one if the competition do a better product...!

I think people that get 'upset' or annoyed about what other people buy are even stranger...

Sorry if I get grumpy about closed minded individuals!

Sometimes you can be close minded by thinking others are close minded

I don't begin to understand the legalities, and which side (Apple or Samsung) is right or wrong, but I think the damage to Apple's image could be substantial.

Not so long ago, Google used to give you a warm glow with their 'Don't be evil' ethos, until their image took a battering over privacy issues and suchlike, I fear Apple could be heading the same way.

I'm no Apple fan-boy ( I dislike their OS for example), but I do revere my Ipad & Iphone, they seem to have a bit of Apple magic dust sprinkled over them, these bun fights with other makers could end in tears for Apple, regardless of the success of their lawyers and bean counters.
