Apple TV - Worth it?

Question for anyone who has one... with the new TV app, can you select on the iPad what to watch on the Apple TV, or if you select something on the iPad does the stream go “internet” to iPad to AppleTV?

I think you mean is it Streaming from the iPad in contrast to the Chromecast etc where the iPad is merely a controller of the separate streaming from “internet” to chromecast? I’m pretty sure it is via AirPlay like the previous ATV.
BTW ATVs do not support subtitles from BBC iPlayer (unlike chromecast) if this is important to you.
