Yes
I am sure back in the day you used to be able to purchase an item online and pick up at an Apple store, is this not the case any more? I just can not find the option to enable me to do that.

The reason I ask is I am pondering getting a macbook air using an educational discount which takes a chunk of change off the overall price

The reason I would like to collect at the Apple store is because I wouldn't want to entrust delivery of such an expensive item to a courier and for peace of mind would like to collect it in person.

I know I could just rock up at an apple store and buy one but that would leave me with a dilemma as I do not have a faculty ID card and so I would not be able to get the educational discount - The work I do is ad hock and via email near on 100% of the time so all I have is an academic email,

What I wanted to do was buy online and then pick it up from my local apple store

I've never known apple to do a collect on store. Not sure why you are worried about the courier. That's apples problem to ensure it gets to you in one piece.

When I first tried out an iPhone it was an iPhone 4 which I paid for and then picked up at Apple Buchanan Street, Glasgow - so yes they used to do it

I note they still seem to offer this service in the USA but not the UK

I rather not be out of pocket and going back and forth for weeks whilst they work out what happened to a missing laptop etc.

Does the Apple store have a contact phone number so you can get the info from the horse's mouth? Surely, if you are entitled to the educational discount, you could get suitable ID.

Yup I could ring the store in question but if my previous experience is anything to go by it will be painful and I will be none the wiser at the end of the call

They did that and still do occasionally for product launches. But not as a regular thing.

I've bought all of mine online and had them delivered. Never had any issue whatsoever. The packaging is superb, it is in a brown outer box and inside is the normal packaging box. So double packed, and the courier is dedicated to Apple. They supply lots and lots.

Naturally after saying that your will go wrong. Further more if you want a deviation from a standard built you have to order it online.

I am capable of doing any upgrades myself at a much cheaper cost ;)
Depends on what you are getting, as you may be capable it is not worth doing it on a new one. And as you are getting an air I really wouldn't suggest you do it yourself unless you love the smell of solder. But as said I wouldn't do that on a new one.

I did look into getting a secondhand one but I fast came to the conclusion that some people are really deluded about what there secondhand macbook air is worth.

Interesting phrasing considering you didn't get a secondhand one ;)

Not sure I follow

I was looking at some secondhand macbook air's, most were scratched to buggery and some has serious ding/dent damage, were an older model with a lower spec, yet they were expecting to sell them at around the £600+ mark

Why would I, or anyone for that matter, pay that amount when I can get one brand new, latest spec, from Apple for just £644?

A. You are comparing your educational discount price like everyone can get it for that price. Most of us don't unfortunately.
B. Are you suggesting that it is the entry level 11" 128GB that is selling for that much with a damaged case? That does seem excessive.

I'd still like to know how you are going to upgrade one yourself ;) hope you are good with a soldering iron.

Even without the education discount £600+ for a damaged, old, low spec one is excessive if you ask me, a new latest spec one with no discount is only £749

I am not adverse to building, taking apart computers etc. so upgrading a macbook air wouldn't faze me

Ok cool, you do know that memory, disk and cpu are soldered in? And that most elements of the machine are glued in. I know it can be done, but in order to make it small like that this is no ordinary laptop built on a common component modular frame like dell laptop and basically any pc. Good luck to you, I think you are mad do that to a new MacBook Air.

You will need proof of discount in the apple store. So you would need proper ID or you won't get the discount. And you have to go in store.

I am aware that yes, only thing you have wrong is that the hard drive is PCIe flash based and can easily be swapped out

I never actually said I was going to tamper with a new macknbook air I just indicated that should the need arise I was capable/happy to do any upgrades myself ;)

Fair enough you are right, the latest models are no longer soldered...That is a change from earlier MBA...

Oh yes, I've used it several time to try and figure out how to get into a device.

Well the deed is done & I have bit the bullet

1 Macbook Air on its way to me.

Having been pretty much a windows user using the laptop will be a bit of a learning curve but one I am willing to give a fair go at.

Well I have just sat through a 90 min video tutorial for newbs on how to use a MAC 2015 Yosemite

It was all going well until we got to the end and the guy said MACS do not get viruses and you do not need any virus protection for your MAC  - That's one bit of advice I will be taking no notice of

In other news just received notice that it has been dispatched and is on its way to me :)

Strictly speaking he is correct, it is rare these days to get a virus ;) .....However that doesn't mean you don't need protection for malware and other security vulnerabilities....

OK I am now going through the phase I always go through when I buy something expensive.........

OH MY GOD! what have I done! I shouldn't really have bought that! It costs far to much!

You can always just send it back :) or use it as lemon slicer. :p

Actually seriously considering sending it back and re-ordering it again

I went to go and look at my order status and I notice today they are giving away a free pair of Beats headphones worth £170 with each Mac!

Well what can I say, Apple have proved there customer service is one of the best yet again.

I spoke to them on chat about how miffed I was at missing out on the Beats and they are going to send me a pair free of charge!

That is indeed the Apple way. And sure other systems can match it, but that customer experience is good. I tried it with Microsoft as they gave away a free Fitbit. But no they made me return one item and get s refund, and buy the same item again. I was out of pocket for a short period of time , and they now had an open box item. Just doesn't make any logical nor financial sense. Apple got that part right.

fixed that for you

Rare but not impossible, and with the recent 0 day vulnerabilities being published, you definitely want some protection on your machine.

Especially with how slack Apple are at patching vulnerabilities, yet, such is their marketing skills that people see it as a good thing.

My apologies I was being pedantic. The recent vulnerabilities are very real, a virus however isn't ;)

Will be if they don't patch them quick, as part of the research they created the Thunderstrike 2 virus, which can spread across networked apples and via usb and network adapters.

You are right though, there's not been any real "virus" in the wild, I imagine it will change as Mac's gain more market share and come under target more often though.

People *should* struggle to get viruses on a PC as well, since browsers like Chrome are in their own sandboxes and UAC should prompt users before anything makes a system level change. Unfortunately, people are dumb and disable UAC as it gets in the way..

Well it arrived at around 11:30am but is still sat in its box unopened

I was so stressed by the whole event that I had to go out for coffee and some retail therapy :D

I'd open it to check whether it is dented :p
