Edit My Images
Yes
Folks, as I have ordered a new imac and a time capsule there is 1 question I wasn't sure of- I have a load of images stored on an external drive which I want to have available on the new imac. Can I put the external drive from my pc ( usb type portable drive) into the time capsule and view the contents on the imac ? I know there is migration software available but for some reason I have it in my head that using the time capsule I can view my portable drive on various other pc and Apple devices...Anyone have the answer. Thanks...

you'll need to format the drive before it can connect to the time capsule i think

best off setting both the iMac and PC up and using FTP software to move the files across to the iMac, then you can format the disk hook it up to the time capsule and copy data across.

you can use the time capsule to share to both machines.

however, time capsule wont read NTFS drives so will probably need reformatting.

windows wont see any of the mac file systems but that is largely irrelvent when you can leave the drive connected to the TC and share it over the network.

Lets see if I get this or not..lol...I can FTP them( images only) over to my Imac and leave the images on my portable hard drive but connect it to the time capsule to allow me to view on the upstairs pc etc or do I FTP the images to the time capsule which has a 2TB drive and would give me loads of room spare.

I think you can just plug it into the iMac via one of the USB ports. That's what I've done with mine anyway.

Yeah but im looking at viewing images on a portable pc drive(NTFS) and want to view on the new Imac and still be able to view on the upstairs pc when required but I know that's ok with the time capsule by just adding the pc to the network.

macs will read but wont write to NTFS by default. you have to enable that via the terminal (search "NTFS" on here you should find it).

however i am unsure what TC supports, google suggests it will only read FAT32 (which has a 4Gb maximum file size limit) or HFS.

The Mac will read NTFS files So you can look at the images on the Mac However if you want to store them on Time Machine they will need to be imported onto the Mac. OK so how do you get the images back onto your PC. Easiest way is to get a copy of NTFS for Mac from Paragon Software. it's $19.95 and you can download it straight from their site. Version 12 supports Yosemite. This way you can download images from your Mac onto a NTFS formatted drive.

Using NTFS for Mac you can leave the images on the External drive and use it for both PC and Mac. I did this for s couple of years whilst I had to use both PC and Mac machines

Doesn't the migration software which is free do a similar type of job? Cheers.

Migration Assistant is designed to transfer data from one Mac to another, such as when you purchase a new Mac and want to move everything from the old machine to the new one. The use of Time capsule is simply that it will use the latest backup to perform this task using the last backup. Now Time Capsule I believe is formatted FAT 32 so that it can be used with both Mac's and PC's , but I would confirm this with Apple as the data I have is a few years old. This means you could use Time capsule as a storage device as well as a backup. Put you images on TC and let both mac and PC access them.

You could try and see if both your PC and Mac can communicate with TC. If so you might want to load your images onto TC and share that way.
