So I couldn't wait for the updated Mac mini any longer - I bought a new i7 and a 480gb crucial SSD to fit along with 16gb Kingston ram. Amazon are doing them with approx £40 off rrp (yes I know about the university pricing but am not dishonest).
Opened up the mini, with the intention of swapping out the mechanical drive for the SSD. But Apple have fitted the drive in the upper bay rather than the more usual lower bay. So rather than minimal dissection to swap out the drive the whole thing has to come to bits.
Actually, assuming I can find the right cable, they have done me a favour as it is very easy to just slip the SSD in the lower bay as an additional drive - so I can have the SSD as the c drive and the 1tb as the d drive or I assume I could make a ghetto fusion drive with the two.
I think I have found the cable (OWC do make the cable universal depending on how it is folded apparently) so just got to wait for that now to make my mini fly
