Have you tried hooking the 2 together with a firewire cable, then starting the mac you wish to transfer the data from with the "T" key depressed - this will put into target disk mode and it will appear as an external volume on the other Mac.

You should then be able transfer the data across by selecting the option "From a Time Machine Backup or other Volume" when you reach the migration part of the setup, or using the migration assistant.

This method should also work with thunderbolt as well.

This is assuming both macs are equipped with firewire or thunderbolt ports.

Just looked one has thunder bolt tho other hasn't and both have FireWire

OK, then all you need is a firewire cable connecting them together, and the instructions in my previous post.

I end up doing a lot of mac migration and it's my preferred method, mainly because I know it will work straight off 99.999% of the time.

Another option to consider - and pretty much guaranteed to work - is ensure you've got a completely current Time Machine backup of the old system, and then perform a full restore of that onto the new system. It'll take several hours, depending on the original's HD/SSD capacity, but it's about as easy as it gets.

dont have a spare HD at min so time machine is not a option
will have a look for a firewire to be honest there is not alot of data on it but still need to shift it across more on my pc but its goign to be more on the mac very soon just love it
