Apple launch new MacBook Pro

Yipee a new 11" macbook air with 8gb of ram - sooo going to buy one at the weekend :)

I had a quick look at this yesterday. Nvidea graphics card is a welcome addition but the spec of the graphics card is lower than the screens resolution.

So adding AppleCare adds another £280 to the cost of the £1800 15" retina display MBP....

What are your service options after 3 years or is it just considered a (very expensive) consumable?

you sell it for 75% of what it cost you on 2 years 11 months and 29 days

and then buy a new model :D

can't believe the battery is so unchangeable. crazy

This is not really anything new for apple. Since the switch to intel macs have in general become harder and harder to service.

With the current iMacs it's basically one big trap that's, IMO, designed in to break the machine if you attempt to "service" it without knowing what you're doing.

That said I'm pretty sure that it's not only Apple that makes their products difficult to service.

With regards to the batteries in Mac laptops, there's a pretty good reason why apple don't want people messing with them. Just google "lithium polymer explosion" if you want to know the reason. Then consider that the batteries in apple laptops are considerably bigger than most of the examples you'll find. I've had a MacBook air battery make quite a nasty mess simply as a result of a dropped screwdriver.

will you be able to though, if its old line technology and cant be updated? not like the previous range where you can buy a used system, slap an SSD and 8-16gb memory in and youre flying.

I think you are into something there. My c2d 4gb 256ssd MBA is depreciating a lot more than any other mac I've ever owned.

After seeing this new MBP with the High-Res Screen, my 3 month old 15'' MBP feels rubbish :P

Damnn you apple!

It's not that the batteries are inherently dangerous....it's just that making it removable means you have to have two layers of casing around the battery (and a sufficiently durable connector). With the latest MBP and MBA being so thin, even 1mm additional thickness will make a big difference to capacity.

I've just ordered one. You can still get ethernet with an adaptor, CD drive through wireless (using my other halfs MacBook Pro) or buy it separately, and FW from an adaptor.

I'm surprised no one has complained about the lack of 3.5" Floppy

Really disappointed with the lack of 3 1/2 floppy drive....

thats great but it a load of extra bits floating around in your bag or relying on a shared CD drive nearby for a supposedly "professional" laptop.

Well I've had a quote for 2.6GHz, 16Gb, 512Gb retina model with thunderbolt display, thunderbolt cable, gigabyte ethernet, applecare and magsafe 1 to 2 adapter for £2850 then I claim nearly £500 VAT back so £2350.........

4 years use and £850 residual works out at about £1 a day :)

People are forgetting that you can daisy chain thunderbolt, so even if it did only have 1 thunderbolt port you could chain from the back of the monitor after that..

only if you buy Apple's monitor.

my Dell U2711 would mean i HAVE to use one TB port as Displayport, as most other display adaptors would not support this resolution.

not going to change monitors just for a single port. Displayport came first and is the standard, Apple and Intel messed this standard up completely by adding TB to it.

Can't find it at the moment but someone has done a thunderbolt to DP/Gb net/Firewire800/USB3/thunderbolt hub box saw it last week I think..... Might have been on THG or AppleInsider

EDIT: Belkin do one which they launched last year but that wasn't the one I was thinking about..... One of these devices would be quite useful for me for the Macbook Air or new Macbook Pro when I eventually get it.

EDIT2: Found it, it is Matrox.... http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2012...olt-dock-for-latest-ultrabooks-mac-portables/

:D

not at all, i just think its stupid to remove standard options at the cost of having to carry extra kit.

Yes, I'm sure a gigabyte ethernet would have fitted in !

Unfortunately not all thunderbolt devices have a through port eg Apple's own gigabyte ethernet adapter

Umm no. The connector is higher than the new MBP body...

It's thicker than PCMCIA too but there are ways. With so many new thin computers a replacement for the old RJ45 should be considered. It certainly isn't a deal breaker though as I will simply leave the thunderbolt to ethernet adapter connected to the cable I would have plugged in anyway.

Yesterday I had a good play with one at my local apple store, and must admit that I am rather underwhelmed. No, actually, disappointed.

There is no denying that the retina display looks great at the default retina setting. And at best to say ok when have it at the highest scaled setting (1920x1200).

But the standard retina setting makes it look like it has actually less desktop space compared to my 13" MacBook air. Everything is super crisp but oh so big and feels enlarged to me.

At the 'most space' setting it is ok and legible but distinctly less than my 30" monitor. Can't say it looks any better than my old dell Inspiron 9100 which had a matte 1920x1200 in 15.4" screen. The sparkle the retina has, is in my opinion purely due to the shiny but, to be fair, not reflective screen.

My problem with it though is that regardless of which setting is used, it is not fluid. In fact when using aperture it is worse than my MacBook Air and my Mac Pro with ati 5870 card. When you switch screens from normal to full screen, or in windowed mode enlarge it there is this stuttering and delay. Same when switching between matrix views and single view and full screen view. Also scrolling through lots of photos is not fast and most definitely not fluid.

In my opinion this could be sorted with better nvidia drivers as aperture is heavily reliant on OpenGL for the user interface. I noticed that speed increase and fluidity myself when changing my pro from nvidia to ati.

Once in full screen view and applying edits they are instant. Much faster than my macbook air but on par with the pro. Which to me seems to demonstrate the processor and ssd are fine. Also taking an app like Excel 2011 it is rapid enough.

Unfortunately I will be keeping my bank notes in my pocket and not get one until these issues are sorted. I'll wait for the next generation.

Shame I wanted it so much, but I wouldn't even pay £500 for one.

So apple have release an update which seems to suggest that the stuttering is resolved. In true apple fashion the release note doesn't go into detail. :(

Also the great old utility switchresx has been update and allows you to run at native 2880x1800 resolution.

Hmm it might be back on again :) I'll see when I can have another play and what updates the machines have installed.

So today was the WWDC at Apple and they have finally announced the new MBP with Retina display. Looks an impressive spec and has an SSD rather the conventional HD. Looks like the standard MBP will continue along side for the time being with some performance upgrades.

Im a little disappointed that Mountain Lion was not released, think we have another month to wait.

yep its nice shame you cant bootcamp it yet drivers not ready for screen but soon
