Hi, iv been looking at getting an Apple, now if i go for one with less ram would it be easy to upgrade with something like crucial or ballistiks?? or is it special ram??
 
Yeah - don't buy memory direct from apple, buy it from Crucial - way way cheaper!
 
Lovely, thans for that.. when you look at thier machines for the extra ram they put on like £200!! the difference between 2 and 4 gig or ram!! you can get ram dirt cheap!! lol.. good stuff too!

You can get the base model, then go to crucial, tell them your model and they will choose the right (crucial) memory for you...much cheaper too.

However, dont get rid of the original memory, just incase you need to return your machine under warranty. I believe crucial invalidates the warranty (so i hear anyway)

I bought my imac with base spec RAM and bought 4Gb from Crucial. I installed it before I powered up for the first time. After a few days the cooling fan started clicking so the unit had to go back. Glad I'd kept that original memory!
 
excellent news from you guys.. i went to the Apple shop today and the guy i spoke to also said i could upgrade with 3rd party but keep the Apple stuff just incase..

how easy it is will depend on what you're buying. i've got a mac mini and its the only pc i've had to use a couple of wallpaper scrapers to open the case :lol:. how easy it is to upgrade any of the other macs? anyone know.
 
I remember chaning the HDD in an eMac, it seemed that the whole system was built with the HDD at the centre! Apple have made it much easier with the Macbooks, just some covers in the battery compartment!
 
i got my mac pro today, iv never used one before and my pc skills are questionable!! but.. i managed to put in a new 1TB drive that i bought and wouldnt fit in my pc, i managed to partitionit and format, then install my old drives from the pc to get my stuff off them.. it took me 30 mins!! i like it already.. no!! i LOVE it!!! lol... now i just need to get some software on it so i can play...

As said before go to Crucial but keep the original

A Mac Pro as well... verrry nice :naughty: What monitor (s)?

I've had a 24-inch 2.4Ghz iMac for a year now and it's still pretty fast. Your Mac Pro should see you through quite a few years of mac goodness.

What software are you planning on using for photography? I highly recommend Aperture. If you like using the standard iPhoto that comes with OS X for sorting out your photo library, then Aperture is basically a professional update to that - more sortability and a vast range of editing tools at your disposal. I've tried Lightroom, but I've already been converted to Aperture.

There's loads of trial versions of different software on the Apple website - download some stuff and decide from there. Gimme a shout if you need any advice on using your mac.

BTW - you'll find loads of cool bits of freeware / shareware for you mac too - just have a look on Versiontracker

also, for another RAM location, OCUK [overclockers] in Stoke do cheaper memory - it is crucial stuff, and I've 4Gb in my MBP which works a dream. Also meant I could throw the 2GB from my MBP into my wife's MB - also improved the speed no end!

Thanks Exi,, im still getting used to it atm.. iv had Shutterman and Natjag round f couple of times trying to show the old fool how its done!! Its like teaching an old dog not to wee up tree's!! lol..
Im getting there though.. iv got Aperture, its a great tool but not in MY hands.. like British rail, im getting there!!! JUST!

Thanks for the tip, iv been looking around, the stuff thats OK for Mac is still more expensive than normal stuff!! but at least its still cheaper than Apples own brand!!! :thumbs:

Iv managed to redo my website with it! only took me an hour or so.. then 2 hours to figure out how to upload it to my host!! lol.. but thats another story... :lol:

I use OcUK on and off - had a couple of borked items from them over time, had no problems with their customer service at all...

There's tales of bad customer service from just about every retailer, you never get to hear the good stories though...
 
Very true. There are bad within even the best retailers...

But when those bad stories permeate everything and taint the name...you can't help but sit up and take notice :p

Do it Girl do it,
I have built and maintained every pc we have ever had for donkeys years.
Even though all my systems have been stable windows is such a pain so much memmory use virusses etc etc.

I have an imac for me and my goodlady has acess to it, good few eeepc they use linux and are a pleasure to surf with.
The big pc's are running on linux ubuntu.
Ill get a couple of old imacs for the kids later.
Windows is dead to me now.
Oh yeah buy crucial memmory my first lot from crucial died in a day but the second batch is still going strong months later
 
Just ordered a load of Crucial ram for the Pro. I'll let you know what 8gb feels like :D
