It seems you can connect wirelessly with an Eye-Fi card, which is an SD card. If your camera takes CF type 2, you can get an SD adaptor, though many aren't 100% reliable. The D700 takes CF tyoe 1, so no wireless option.

With wireless you can certainly shoot a few images, which then load onto the ipad. I don't know if you can with wired, or if you have to wait for each image to load before you can take the next.

I've got an iPad and I use it to preview and store the RAW images straight from the SD Card. The apple connection kit, as stated above, has a SD card reader and a USB connection.

There are image editing apps, and their quite good, but there is virtually no tweaking of the display settings, so in my opinion its of limited use.

An great way to preview shots in the field, an outstanding photo album to carry around though, oh yes, and its a great computer too!

Another advantage is that it is small light and easy to stash in the car.

Very nice find, thanks. I'd much rather that than have to take my camera lead and plug that into the iPad (via usb dongle) all the time.

As for tethering, I'd just like to use the iPad as a larger viewer, not true tethering (with camera controls). Maybe an ap will appear one day.
