Hi All
just got myself an iMac to do my pics on, when i finally get round to getting some done that is
Can you guys give me some advise on what sort of software to use without breaking my bank please
Thanks:)

I use Aperture 3. It was fairly inexpensive when the app store first opened just over a year ago, not sure how much it is now though. It allows me to do everything I require from processing to organising all my files.

it all depends on what you use it for. tbh i've not even got as far as Aperture. I just use iPhoto which came on my Macbook Pro. Its a good place to start & if you find it too limiting then maybe move onto Aperture.
I was even considering some form of Photoshop, but iPhoto is surprisingly good for a freeby.

Agree, I would try iPhoto first. It accepts Raw files from a lot of cameras and works very quickly with them. It has a simple set of editing functions (exposure, histogram, sharpness, shadows, WB, cropping, convert to B+W etc,.)
Also easy to create folders, manage/store photos etc,.
If you find you need more then Aperture or Lightroom are about the same price. I trialled both and preferred Aperture as it was an Apple product and therefore more intuitive!

Aperture is still £54.99 in the App Store

Lightroom 4 @ £99 is a bargain. Ive been using this more than PS5 recently and is a great bit of software. Truly a must for anyone and very simple to use

I'd suggest you give iPhoto, Aperture and Lightroom a try. iPhoto should be on your iMac, both Aperture and Lightroom offer free trials. The last thing you'll want, having spent so much time sorting, rating, tagging, key-wording your work only to find it's not the application you're comfortable with

When you factor in the cost of your photography gear, and your IT stuff (iMac, hard drives, back-ups, etc.) the cost of a £100 application becomes justifiable? Bearing in mind, I think both Aperture and Lightroom are much less than £100.

I used iPhoto at the start - but now am converted on to Aperture - I get much better results when shooting in RAW - I've more control over things . Now I get frustrated by iPhoto .

I’ve just moved from Aperture to lightroom based on the speed of the application, Aperture is very resource hungry and I found lighroom just as good to process you photos. In some cases the clone tool is much more precise...

Dan.

Thanks to all the replies, have played with iPhoto
Tonight and yeh I agree it's ok for a freeby.
Buti have ordered adobe photo elements10, got a good deal with it,
Will try the free trail on lightroom and aperture too
Thanks again guys

Lightroom 4 is a great place to start, if you want to spend a little more Capture One is a powerful package.

Do you have children in school, adobe have a discount scheme for students which cuts the costs even more.
