Apple Chargers

Apple OVERchargers?

Certainly an interesting youtube video.

Apple can be so anal about their kit, but their pricing is fairly outrageous.......Mj

To quote from the video in the OP
He added: "You get what you pay for unfortunately. If you are buying primarily on price and it is ridiculously cheap - there's probably a good reason for that."
Is it outrageous?

The official Apple 5W USB charger is £19 (on the Apple site), the Ikea one the teardown guy reviewed above and found it very well engineered £7 (plus it has 3 USB ports compared to the Apple 1 USB port).

Personally I think £20 is too much, however only spending a couple of quid could be a bad idea (although he did a teardown of a Poundland powerbank and actually found it not too bad, albeit inconsistent mAh).

I use 2 of these; http://www.tylt.com/charging-station/

£20 isn't too much to be save in my opinion, and yes the Ikea one may be very good (is it fast or slow?) but how do ordinary people know who don't watch youtube videos all the time. I've had twice power supplies go bang on me, first time a Ninento DS replacement - some generic, second time a multi USB one, also cheap generic. I don't want to take any more risks with cheap copies.

No I know, it's all about what you deem acceptable risk/£. But at the same time there are some good 3rd party units out there (i.e. the Ikea and Tiger ones he did teardowns on and were built well), but spending any less on your multi £100's device would be risky imo.

Fortunately when I ordered my OP3 I had their initial problem early on where stock was delayed so I got a coupon code from them and it allowed me to get another Dash charger (£15 5V/4A).

edit: FWIW any electrical device can fail, I found his EE power bank teardown interesting. Although all the bad press on a couple blowing up and the media frenzy and subsequent recall he could not find any construction issues and concluded it was probably just bad luck on a couple of units.

I don't do apple products so cannot comment our household is samsung phones and tablets and I wouldn't buy a non genuine charger if i needed to.

You have a track record of not commenting don't you.

I buy the Anker ones from Amazon.

I wouldn't mind paying £10-£15 for a genuine apple one but at 1m, they are too short for that price.
