Apple Aperture or LR4

Aperture for me personally - the software is easy to use and organises your photos very well!

Lightroom everytime here, much more intuitive for me.

I have both Aperture 3 and Lightroom 4 and heres my very brief thoughts;

Aperture is easier to organise and import your shots into BUT

Lightroom 4 is MUCH better at processing the images, there is a whole host of reasons why but trust me when I say Lightroom is much better than Aperture for this and I have only been using LR for about a month, Aperture I have had for about 6 months.

I started out with Lightroom, mostly because I was a user of Pixmantec Rawshooter whom Adobe bought out and this formed the basis of Lightroom v.1

When I decided to switch to a Mac (mainly because of a dislike of Windows Vista) I gave Aperture 2 a go, and spent about a year using this, but there were various things that I always preferred about Lightroom and I've switched back.

To anyone who has yet to try either, I'd recommend giving both a trial and seeing which one you prefer and you prefer the best - I think there is a 30 day trial for both available.

What I prefer and what you or anyone else prefers may vary. So I don't really see the point of asking.

Personally I prefer Lightroom, but I would recommend downloading the trial for both and see which one YOU prefer.

I'm a pretty happy with Aperture 3 having not really had much chance to compare it to LR4 though I did have a play with LR3. Can't honestly say I have strong feelings for either and the number of threads on this subject with a fairly even split down the middle suggests that this might be another Canon v Nikon argument, i.e. there is no real right or wrong. One thing I would say though is that Aperture must surely be due an update now as I believe it's getting on for 2 years old. Could be worth bearing in mind before splashing out your hard earned.

Of course there is, Canon is right :)

Using the 30 day trial is a good idea but bear in mind Aperture is much easier to get to grips with at first unless, but lightroom is more powerful at image processing. Like I said, I use both depending on what I need to do to the shots, if its minimal processing and light tweaks then I use Aperture as its easier to use/catalogue but if it needs a bit more work then I export it to Lightroom for further work :) Works for me but most people will prob only want one programme.

Ultimately pointless thread. People who use aperture will say aperture... and vice versa. Download trials of both, and decide for yourself.

Not if people give their views of why they use it. Good and bad points and let the op decide what's ultimately pointless. Like your post.

One person will prefer the workflow of LR4, my view is Aperture 3 has a better workflow, it's such a personal thing that no answer is wrong or right, the OP is not going to be any the wiser no mater now many people give their view on why they use one or the other, plus there are lots of other software that many people use and are happy with, it not a two horse race by any means, so I'm in the pointless thread camp.

If you want to pick then download the free trails like everyone else has done and make your own mind up.

I have both, part of my adobe subscription, but much prefer the workflow in aperture. I've given Lightroom a good go at a few professional jobs but it just doesn't make sense to me in many ways. The only thing it has over aperture IMO is lens correction profiles, but even then I had to manually adjust so may as well do it manually in aperture. Apertures brushes, library management, keywords and overall integration with osx is just fantastic.

Trial for aperture is no longer officially available, and downloading one of the many "trials" from sources other than Apple would be infringing license agreements....

I thinking would be useful for the op and others to learn in which way it is MORE "powerful" then Aperture and why that is a benefit :)

I've got PS CS5 set up as an editor in Aperture, so that I have the best if both worlds :-) Works very well!

What do you mean by "processing engine" as they both use exactly the same raw converter ? Also how do you quantify the processing engine power of one bit of software over another.

Lightroom, I just prefer it. :)

As I have it, I've been having a play over the last few days. I've watched a couple of tutorials on YouTube and have to say I'm starting to like it more and more.

It's nice and simple, maybe one or two less features than LR, but on the whole it's a grower for me.

I bought Aperture version 1.5 and dumped it in favour of Light Room. I now have a monthly plan with Adobe so I get the entire CS suite and LR inc new updates so I wouldn't switch back. Also once you make the decision and go for one you are pretty much locked in as transferring your stuff from one to the other is not a straight forward task. All my images are indexed so it would be even harder.

Starting from stretch with both the latest versions would be a more difficult decision that switching though!
