App available for data leads?

Hey folks, im looking to see if there are any free apps (android) that can be used in the likes of a wedding fayre? I need something very basic, Basically their names and email address, wedding date and contact number etc and put them into a database of sorts so i can go through them when I get home. Possibly export them to excel or something?
 
You need to check data protection guidelines on this, you are not allowed to harvest data like email address and use them to contact people without express permission from the data owner.

you need to make sure that

a: the supplier of the data has given you express permission usually an opt out form to use the data to contact them.
b: an opt-out form which allows them to give you permission for ad-hoc mailing contact etc.

Urm, surely if you take a persons name and email address at a wedding fayre then they have given it to you so that you can contact them.

Data protection gone MAD.o_O

not realy there are also other things to consider and that is how this data will be stored? is it encrypted etc.
 
Thanks for the replys guys, well upon going as a spectator to various venues of wedding fayres I see businesses taking customer details. Why it would need encrypted for basic details like email and name Im not sure as its only to send them my wedding details should they ask for information of my services

Because we are about to adopt some *very* heavy duty data protection laws. They aren't really designed for small businesses collecting addresses at wedding fares, but they do apply.

This is why you'll want a proper app rather than the old fashioned way of a simple web form on a connected tablet dumping data to MailChimp. I haven't checked the regs for this but you may find it's actually less trouble to collect details on paper and worry about processing later. Current DPA doesn't apply to handwritten paper forms :)

when you take information from customers you fall into the data protection act, you need then to take reasonable steps to stop that falling into the wrong hands, think about it.

you have peoples name, address, telephone number, email address's all these things can be used to clone and impersonate some one and you would be financially liable if this happened.

Two completely different scenarios, but as usual the small innocent businesses are lumped into a single group and have to deal with all the bureaucratic b******t at great cost because a few big companies take advantage.

I completely agree that there should be some sort of regulation where a person has given an email address as part of an online order. I hate these Opt In, Opt Out tick boxes which companies use to catch you out, but if I give my email address to somebody in person for a specific reason then I've done it so that they can contact me. The hypocrisy is that there are already laws regarding data protection which should already prevent this and yet they can't even police that. Instead they just introduce more red tape that will affect the small businesses far more then the big ones.

I gave a plumber my email address the other day so that he could email me a quote. I would never expect to fill in some sort of opt out form and would simply refuse if I was made to do so.

However all that is readily available via the BT phone book if you have a rough idea of where someone lives and their name. World truly is going mad, same with all this crap about everything having to be Politically correct. Only thing I was for collecting as mentioned above is Name, Email address and perhaps number. Oh and what service they were thinking about from myself. If its "better" Ill use the paper method however 90% of any vendor I see at fayres etc use electronic methods for this info. I would only assume its something like Google Forms or the likes.

As to the data security, would you be happy for all the companies that hold your data top be as flagrant with it as you are?

Should npower have all your details on a bit of paper in a file in reception so everyone has a good peek?
if you are storing customer data you need to take good basic steps to ensure the safety of it.

Honestly if npower only had my name, email and number I wouldn't care, what are they going to gain from this? As I previously stated this information like name and number and address is easily available form the BT phonebook online directory for everyone to view.

Exactly. And again the topic to which the thread was made for was glossed over by some. While I appreciate they fact there is data protections acts in place those reply's do not in any way answer the question I initially asked. The apps could have data security and encryption involved thats grand, but I'm asking if there is any apps available to help me with which I require.

You could make a simple Google Form, with your branding, and add a check box stating that they are consenting to being contacted for the purposes of marketing wedding photography for the period of 1 year.

Thanks for your input, yea Google forms was only thing I could think of too. Never thought on putting the consenting box on it though. cheers for that.

Considering you ignored my initial question and decided to give a data protection speech I don't think you are in any position to to dictate what I've missed.

Anyhow thanks for everyone's input on this.

I'll settle for paper and pen as digital seems to annoy some. (Yes I'll have an "consent" section in it too)

You seem quite angry with people who have offered help.

I think the law is over zealous too but with €20M fines as the penalty it's as well to be prudent.

I also think the law will be widely disregarded and after a year or so will be no more or less effective than the stupid EU cookie thing. But we'll see.

I totally agree. But on this occasion (unlike most tax laws) there isn't one law for big firms and another for small. I know firms spending more than my turnover just on printing posters about this.

I'll very strongly agree with that statement. Its annoying and a waste of my time. I'm totally against it.
However going back to the OPs post, I'm sure if someone was giving you contact details, then they want you to call them about that wedding service you offer.

Oh no - all that has to be paid for now, on line searches, all cost you a small amount...

So what you're saying is that data protection is important until you bring out your wallet.
Whether or not you have to pay for it, it's still out there for all and sundry to see, if they wish to.

Data protection is important, to a point. I just feel they are pushing it to far which in turn will make criminals out of most small business owners.
 
To fully understand data protection you need to get an understanding of what defines data that needs your protection.
this below is a quick read that clarifies it. people can moan all they like about not wanting to take responsinility like the OP but they would be the first to kick off if personal data ended up in a website dump to be used as scam email etc. its not all about bank cards and credit cards, personally identifiable data or PID in the industry leads to fraud.

as an IT professional working in the sector for years it is ingrained in the culture.

The opt out box gives you permission to use that data, if you then just stick it on an excel spreadsheet on an usb stick or laptop / desktop that isn't encrypted then you may as well just leave it on a park bench.

It's a tough one. I'll guarantee that every single charity contacting that lady thought they were doing the right thing. And individually they possibly were. But all those snowflakes became an avalanche.

But yes, every person handing over their details at a fair at that time wants to be contacted by that business.

Its remarkably hard to make a law that basically says "think carefully".
