I don't know which bit of the forum to put this message in so mods please feel free to move it if necessary.

After listing a Sony camera for sale in the Classifieds section over a week ago I have today revisited the listing to take it down. I was mortified to discover that there have been replies. Normally the forum automatically alerts me when there are replies to a thread I have started or taken part in, but I received no such alerts on this occasion. Clearly the participants in the advertisement feel that I am rude and unresponsive. I assure you I am neither and I hope you will accept my apologies for failing to realise that you have tried to express your interest. For information the thread is here: http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/threads/sony-rx100ii-with-accessories-warranty.560767/

Incidentally on returning to the thread today it appears that since my last update I can no longer take part as the system is telling me I have "insufficient privileges to reply". For that reason I cannot leave my apologies in the thread itself, hence putting them here.

I have successfully sold items on the forum in the past and I am at a loss as to why this has gone wrong. Anyway, I wish to say sorry to jondc, StuartH, wil, pollie and others. Perhaps in the future if a seller doesn't respond then maybe a PM is in order, just in case they don't understand the system very well.

Because I received no updates from the thread I thought there was no interest and yesterday somebody took the camera off my hands. I would rather have sold it to someone here.

If anyone can shed some light on why I didn't get the updates and why after one posting it appears I was no longer able to contribute to the thread, I would be grateful. Perhaps there has been a change to the classified system since I last used it.

I think you have to actually subscribe to the thread instead of just making/replying to it.

You can set your profile to automatically subscribe to a thread you start, or one that you comment on.

Profile>your account>preferences. Tick the first box and it's subbox.

Philip, thank you for the link - I have checked my profile and everything seems fine, including date of birth. I can't figure out why I got locked out of the classifieds, I have a good trading history.

Mickledore, yes my profile has always been set to automatically subscribe to threads or comments. This is why I'm so confused at not getting the updates for my advertisement.

The thread itself will have auto archived because of no posts in there for two weeks, hence you can't post in it. As for notifications, it will depend on your settings in your control panel, I can't recall what defaults are, whether on or off, but if you look under your own settings, Preferences, you can select to receive notifications or not for threads you start. I don't havethe access to say whether it was a glitch, or you have accidently turned them on/off, but I guess they are off now for whatever reason.

Thanks for the reply Yv. My Preferences have always been set to receive notifications for threads I start or participate in. I double checked and that setting has not been turned off for any reason, so I'm at a loss as to why I didn't get the updates, it's quite strange.

Is it possible thread subscriptions were being marked as spam and were either binned by your ISP or your email program? That seems the simplest reason why they weren't received.

She should still have been notified by forum 'Alert' system ... it is not foolproof, I am still not getting alerts when someone leaves feedback.

No Suz, I've been getting notified as normal from all the other threads I take part in - it's just the one in the Classifieds which didn't seem to be working.

This maybe stating the bleeding obvious,
but if you are relying on the "alerts" top right,
as soon as you click on the drop down,
the numbers disappear, and the threads are no longer highlighted.
Is it possible that you have overlooked posts?
I know I have, in the past.

If its important, then use the "watch thread" tool to subscribe,
and click the email option.

Hi Cobra, no issues with any of those things (I automatically subscribe to all the threads I contribute to) - I haven't been getting any updates, but no problems with the other threads I've taken part in. Really weird.

Hmm weird indeed.

I'll give @Marcel the heads up.
Maybe he will have an answer

Are you using a mobile device or a desk top / Laptop?
Sometimes the App seem to do their own thing.

Hmm that is indeed strange. I'll see what I can dig out

Just a note about how the alert system works, and I think it might be applicable here.

If you get an alert that someone has posted. You don't get any further alerts until you visit the thread again, regardless of how many replies there are afterwards.
I'm wondering if you had the notification from jondc's reply "Just giving it some thought", and naturally assumed there was no need to visit the thread again (as there was no need to reply to that comment).....instead waiting for another notification...which didn't come because you hadn't revisited the thread.

.
Now I've learned something too,
that may account for a couple that I've missed in the past

Thank you for the apology but not to worry, I have had a similar issue, on a number of occasions, as you have described. For this reason I generally just check the thread every so often.

Likewise Lindsay many thanks for the apology but glad you managed to sell the camera. Explanation was very kind of you cheers.

I am yet another that doesn't get notifications regarding trader feedback..... And don't get me started on the Android app

I think I got the same problem recently also I was watching a trading thread I did not get notification. It's only a day or two later that I decided to have a look and find that I had missed some message. No big problem but made me pass for an impolite person.

Ah, I'm with you - so if the threat is crucial I should monitor it manually each day - I'll make sure I do that in future, thanks for the heads up Marcel.

And thanks to Jonothan and Stuart for being so understanding - I know I would have been a bit annoyed if I was interested in something and got no reply from the seller. Whilst a bit embarrassing, this has nevertheless been a useful experience because I've learnt something about the notification system and I'll be more vigilant in future.
