Aperture problem

Right, I'm hoping someone can help.

I imported quite a few pictures from an SD card into aperture yesterday. The import was taking forever so was having a quick edit of a few while it was going on. The problem was that the import wasn't finishing, the little wheel was morbid less complete but hadn't moved for hours. All the pictures were showing in aperture but the import wasn't complete. I had to force quit aperture to get out of it.
Now this is where the problem really starts.
I open aperture up again but my last import isn't there. None of the pictures show up. So I put the SD card back in to import them again but aperture won't see them?
I've closed aperture down lots of times and rebuilt the library and database a few times, yet it still won't see the pictures on the SD card or show them in the last import.
The pictures are on the SD card and have copied them over to my laptop and tried to import from there but it still won't have it.
All aperture sees on the SD card is two old pictures that were never imported.

This is the same for both SD cards that have the same pictures on.

I really hope someone can advise as I really want some if these pictures.
I can view them in preview but aperture just won't see them any more.

Update,

Ive unchecked "do not import duplicates" and all the images have come up. So does aperture think they are in my library somewhere? Or are they in fact here?
If so where?

Just noticed your post and you don't seem to have generated any support. In my early days I used Apple iPhoto for a few years, so I'm guessing Aperture is a big brother version. I'm sorry but I can only recount a similar problem and cannot advise you on Aperture. Forgive my response for being long winded.
Eventually my system started to slow down and finally seized up, with the "wheel of death" more or less permanently displayed. I tried all the repairs advised by help forums and then started to realise that this was a problem many had experienced. The bad thing was Time Machine carried the same problem in every backup. I couldn't get out of whatever the problem was by going back to earlier backups. I became concerned that iPhoto had crashed with all my images entombed.
However I had the sense to have my originals on separate backup systems.
I decided that any software that would lock down my originals was too risky. I decided to change over to Adobe Lightroom 4 as the main selling point for me was that it would never lose or corrupt my original files. LR4 is a professional package that, as a data based system, integrates easily with an existing file architecture.
I may be doing Apple systems an injustice, as I am a fan of iMac and most Apple apps, but perhaps I had just expected too much of and overloaded iPhoto. I suspect Aperture is a similarly structured system.

Adobe Lightroom 4 as the main selling point for me was that it would never lose or corrupt my original files.

Neither will the professional product, Aperture. There are two way to import into Aperture, either right in to the app were it keeps them in your Aperture library ,managed files, or my personal choice as referenced files, were you store your file in a folder of your choice and then just point Aperture to them.

Like LR, Aperture will never lose or corrupt my original files.

If you have not already done so, it may be worth having a quick look at the manual, page 28 is about managed and referenced files

One thing I will say about Aperture is..

TURN OFF FACES

depending on the type of work you do, I find face detection really does slow Aperture down if your importing lots of images with loads of people in them, for example a running event.

Indeed you are quite correct, now that I've taken the trouble to read-up about the app. It gets good reviews and usually is fast. It is not as versatile as LR4 when it comes to pp and, having test run LR5, Adobe continue to improve this aspect.
If the OP has not already studied the manual, I trust he will follow your advice.
