Hi All,

I have an annoying thing happening on Aperture, that I know is down to lack of knowledge on the product but it's now driving me so mad, I am actually thinking of giving it up and going Lightroom.
If I can sort this out, I will be happier.

For a while now I have shot various things, on a memory card, and then imported to Aperture. Due to the fact that a lot of these photos were not easily characterised, I popped them in to a project called "To Be Sorted"
I edit them and then drag them over to their respective folders (Either existing or newly created) Now when I try to then delete it from the To Be Sorted folder, it tells me it will delete that and the others I have moved, then losing all.

Is there any function in Aperture that allows me to MOVE it from To Be Sorted, in to another folder, so it ends up just in the new folder i've moved it to.??????????

Any help would be great, thanks

Darren

Strange, I just tried it with no problems at all. I just dragged a photo over to the project list and dropped it in the new project and the image moved from its original folder to the new one with no problem.

Really??? Mine drops it in to the new project but leaves one in the To Be Sorted folder. Then I can't delete without it deleting all of them.
Says something about others that rely on these masters. I understand the concept of deleting a master deletes the versions etc etc but why it won't let me move it fully is beyond me.

I think I may have to go Lightroom. Export all my master to a folder structure that is new and then LR uses that.
I don't know what else I can do. My To Be Sorted folder is becoming huge quick and I can do nothing about it :-)

Sounds like its importing a master version from you card rather than a copy, or something along those lines. Im assuming you just import directly from your card?

Yes, pop the card straight in to my USB reader and import.

Is there a better way of doing it then.?? Should I copy from card to desktop and the import to Aperture?

No, straight from the card is about the best way of importing, imo.

Ok, try this. Go to your 'to be sorted folder', select one image, with it selected click the new>project icon, when the box opens title the new project and tick the 'move selected items to new project box'.
Just to see if it works better than drag and drop.

PS
You are creating projects arn't you, not albums or folders?

Originally I was creating albums but now it's all projects with albums inside.
So I will have a project for Family and Friends and then albums inside that to show events or occasions.

I will give your idea above, a try, when I get home....In about 90 minutes or so. :-)

OK The new project and move items, worked a treat but I am now in the position where I need to move a load of photos, from the To Be Sorted folder to existing projects.!!

Yeah I kinda knew that's what it may end up being. That's why I thought about going to Lightroom now, while I had the chance to redo all the photo folder structure. Other option I suppose is to back up all the photos I currently have and start Aperture afresh......Either way, thanks for your help Danny :-)

Dude, that duplicate and drag works brilliantly. Thanks again :-)

You may have to duplicate every photo and then move the duplicates and delete the masters when done.

Why would you want to duplicate it it first? Why not just drag/drop straight into the projects?

Are you using it in a referenced or managed model? Did you start moving files outside of Aperture?

Also a tip, did you get the one-2-one unlimited training for a year from Apple? It is very much worth it, I had some great trainings in Aperture from the Apple Geniuses.
