Aperture 3 - YAY!!!

It would have to be mighty special to get me to switch back again (I did use Aperture 1) as I have 6500 images all individually labelled and more importantly tagged! Also all the changes I have made are actually stored as changes rather than stored in the original file which means that all the exposure settings etc would be lost. I might well take a look though....

A3 can import XMP data so that might make things easier.

I am not sure how LR stores the changes...... If it is just an XMP file then that is ideal and Aperture might even run along side it for me to try.

I'd be interested to hear any comments on this as I've used Aperture pretty much since day one but I'm not sure which way to jump now.

I'm currently running Lightroom 3's beta version. I'm not a PS user but, from the bits I've picked up from LR so far, I do like it.

So, do I spend £76 upgrading Aperture? Wait for Lightroom 3 and use that instead, or do I do both?

Trouble is, I really like the interface and the librarly system of Aperture and I'm completely familiar with it.

you have to remember that the Lightroom 3 Beta is Beta software, so will have debug code etc in, production software should be better.

Before I upgraded my Lightroom 1 to Lightroom 2 I tried Aperture 2 and found I preferred Lightroom, I'll be doing the same again this time too.

This is true, and I should have mentioned that the same problem occurs in LR2 as well. From what I've read though it isn't an uncommon problem.

I'm going to get this I think, I've been an Aperture 2 user for ages and I really love it and the 'faces' feature would probably help when I photograph bands.
Does anyone know if you can get a discount for this with a student card? Thanks.

You can get the Apple Educational Discount if ordered through an educational establishment. I think its about £56.

another warning:
when you try to open your old aperture 2, it tries to open aperture 3's library and then gives you an error because its a new version.

so if you are going to get rid of your aperture 3 trial and go back to aperture 2, then you'll need to delete your aperture 3 library

Ironically, the emil notification for this update arrived just as I discovered this :(

To get around it, open AP3 & switch the library back to your old one in the preferences dialog. Then restart when prompted and cancel out when it asks about creating a trial library.

When you launch AP2, you'll have your library back.

another strange thing

import your processed ap2 photo into ap3. make a duplicate and reprocess the duplicate using ap3. go to full screen and compare the 2. the ap3 photo is smaller!!

Does me. It would have gone Gold Master a while ago, and they've already reacted to an issue they've found. To me that says they do actually care about it to keep the maintenance going. I'm loving the update so far. The only think I've noticed is re-processing the D3 RAWs gives slightly darker results, but they look better to my eye.

they are supposed to find them during testing, not after you paid for it.

but still, they are doing better than they did with aperture 1. that had fundamental bugs from day 1 until they finally gave up on it.

the worst problem was when tiger came out and suddenly all the exported ap1 jpegs went soft!! I'd just taken shots at the toyota f1 launch and was trying to get them on line before anyone else. In the end the photos were so soft (having upgraded to tiger the day before) that I had to download a demo of lightroom and do them again.

They didn't find them after you paid for it, they found them before it was launched but after the Gold Master. That means they continue testing even after they've decided it's ready, rather than just moving on. I take it as a good thing.

1) i have no idea what or who gold master is

2) yes it is good that they keep testing it

3) i would have hoped they had tested the slide show function before gold master, ming the merciless, mr miaggi or Buddha himself.

but anyway.. at least it doesnt cost as much as aperture 1 did.. that was a shocking price for what was a piece of crap.

Couple of overlooks....custom print settings don't allow you to specify paper media. You can do it in A2.
Watermark on prints a good thing but can't custom scale or free position them.
Probably not enough to put me off, hopefully coming with future software update.
Lots to like so far.

Been playing with the full version today.. its BUGTASTIC!!!

its buggering up previews, missing out watermarks, putting things in search results that shouldnt be there, putting shadows on previews and all sorts of nonsense.

Still, its better than Aperture 2 was when it was released

I started to install mine at 6pm yesterday. It's been running since then, and whilst it upgraded my library at some point in the night, it's still 'building thumbnails', but 'only' has about 8,000 images to go. :gag:

That's on 28,000 photos, mostly RAW.

I've not experienced the bugs though. Just checked watermarks and it's working ok.

Overall, I'm liking it. :)

I've been trying it and I do like it. I have missed the organisational side of things since switching to LR, and find the brushes a nice tough in A3, so I'll actually probably use both bits of software. LR for my studio stuff (I still can't get the A3 brushes to even out a white background) and A3 for everything else.

I archived 90% of my shots (mainly 2009 shots) before the upgrade and removed them from the gallery. Otherwise I knew I'd be here all night :)

Ha ha. Yes, probably a good plan. Still, it can't be too long before it's finished, and then I can get on with playing with it. It's just a bit jerky while it's doing its thang.

(About 6,000 to go...)

I too have seen all the bugs that Gary mentioned above, hopefully there will be a point release in the not too distant future.

Unfortunately as Apple don't do any mass beta testing these kind of things are bound to happen.

Another thing that is annoying me (I understand that it was there in Aperture 2 but I used to use LR before A3) is that Aperture strips certain EXIF data when it creates/exports versions which messes up things like 'Lens Model' which can be annoying when you are editing a full shoot of 400+ images in photoshop and having aperture cripple the EXIF data.

when i ran the demo version i did a software update and it downloaded an update (for the slideshow i think)
now i deleted the demo version, and installed the full version and software update has nothing for it... strange

My slideshow update came through shortly after installing the full version.

EDIT: You could try downloading it here...

i'm getting annoyed now.. i've had to re-point every export preset to my old watermarks.. and none of the watermarks look like they used to on a photo.

all my keywords are still there, but their groups have gone.

c'mon Apple!

Hmmm... that's annoying. I'm guessing you've had a fiddle with the scale option. Are you definitely exporting the same size photo, and same size watermark?

I've tested the settings that I use for my gallery2 uploads, so I know everything is the same, and the watermark is appearing the same as usual (once I'd re-pointed to it!).

yup, tried scaling it and it came out tiny :)

better hope for a patch soon i guess :)

Same problems here Gary with the trial A3! Only way round it for me when exporting 600 x 600px (whatever is bigger option) was to create a 600 x 600px transparent canvas with the correct size of watermark on it!!! A REAL PAIN!!!

Just got this myself and must say it is quick.

Shame it needs to reboot to 32-bit mode for the Nik Software plug-ins though but they're only 32-bit on the PC too.

I hope everyone is filling in bug reports for the issues they are finding. Apple will sort these things out soon enough, I'm guessing it's a big re-write of a lot of code to make it fully 64 bit etc so not surprised there are bugs.

Pete

i'll do it if they send me a cheque afterwards.
it should work properly to begin with, so i'm not beta testing it for them.

No the beta testers did the beta testing. And they don't get paid either... It's no good complaining it doesn't work if your not prepared to raise the bug.
