Aperture 3 - YAY!!!

Anyone downloaded it yet? Will be upgrading tonight once I'm back in front of the computer. Presets and local adjustments... Cool!

Doesn't seem to fully online yet - I'm having trouble downloading the free trial.
 
Yeah, tried earlier and couldn't get a link. I'll have another go later.
 
The face tagging idea is a clever one - I wonder if Lightroom will add something like this - as far as I can see Lightroom can more or less do all of the 'new' features already. (Or at least the ones I'd actually use)

Ok so this update is not particularly exciting for LR users.... but it is for Aperture users! :D

Aperture is far too much app for iPhone OS and I've not heard of a cut down version coming - although somebody is bound to release something capable of some pretty decent photo editing eventually, even if it's not Apple.

I've been an aperture user since the beginning but when I needed to work with Panasonic RAW files a few months back I had to get Lightroom too.

To say it's a better product is a massive understatement and I would urge anyone thinking of spending more money on Aperture to look at LR first.

I have looked at it. Version 2 and the beta for 3. I just can't get on with the interface and the fact that there isn't much flexibility in the workflow. Aperture just seems to suit the way I want to do things better. Non-destructive brush editing and presets have been an obvious shortfall of Aperture compared to LR so I'm really glad that they're included in v3. If there is support for camera specific default presets and better noise reduction I'll be a happy bunny.
 
This interests me greatly. As it stands, I know Lightroom is much better than Aperture, but I'm getting fed up with the hanging I get with LR3 when using the brushes, even with 4GB RAM it's VERY slow and becoming increasingly frustrating to use.

I'm definitely going to give this a go.

I've tried LR, but Aperture wins for me as I need the IPTC data fields, which are much easier in Aperture.

Just been looking at the aperture site more closely, looks great. I can't wait to get my copy.

I have been a long time LR user as it just felt better to me than Aperture 2 did however I am downloading the trial and may turn back over to use Aperture, I prefer it's terminology of Backup Vaults etc.
 
If you have Aperture 2 you have to rename it to something else before you install the trial otherwise it (the application) will be overwritten. You cannot use your Aperture 2 library with the trial version (it is disabled) as it irreversibly upgrades the library so you can only do that in the full version.

I'm very impressed with the preset system and you CAN auto apply a preset based on the camera which is great news.

The non-destructive brush tools work really well. You can apply (and remove!) all of the adjustments with a brush and then alter there settings with sliders in the toolbox. There is a new skin smoothing tool which works really nicely.

Also great news for me as a 7D/5DII user is the support for video!

Whats it like performance wise? A2 runs like a dog on my macbook, trying to apply adjustments often requires waiting minutes for the spinning beach ball to vanish between each increment.

Also, I see you can import your photos from iPhoto and keep face details, location info etc... but can you do the same exporting to iPhoto?
 
Looks really good, but the dodge brush is far too week for me. If it had the ability to even out a pure white background like I can with the exposure brush in LR3, I'd have made the switch back. Alas, it looks like I'm stuck with the slow Adobe product instead.
 
Have to say, it looks pretty good. I tried both Aperture 2 and LR, and decided on LR in the end (now using LR 3 beta). Going to give the trial a serious look though (currently downloading, but pretty slow....).

You can adjust the slider after you've applied the brush. It's set at 0.4 by default and you can push it up to 1. If that's not enough you can add more than one dodge brush 'layer' by clicking the settings of the dodge brush slider pane and selecting 'Add new dodge adjustment'!

I was able to turn a black background white this way :thumbs:
 
Just giving it a whirl - no support for the Panasonic GF-1, which will rule it out for me for the time being until that's addressed. Shocking really.

Yeah, I did see this but it still takes about four or five adjustments to get the bright white, something I can do in seconds in Lightroom.

Really? I just went from BLACK to WHITE with 4 brush layers, surely your backgrounds can't be that dark?

No, but even with a strong brush it doesn't get anywhere near white. To be honest though, even if I could achieve it in four strokes, LR does it in one so it's a no brainer.

Shame though, as I much prefer the feel and organisational aspect of Aperture.
 
Just using it now, there is a super smooth popup preview as you mouse over an adjustments preset! Very nice.

So far, every time I move my mouse I smile! It's very polished!

This is why, once the iPad was announced, I decided that I'm buying a Modbook ! It will be superb with Lightroom 3 ;)

however, when you export from ap2 and ap3 the results are the same.
its only on the preview screen that you get the halo.
doesnt help when you are making adjustments, but hopefully they will fix it
 
Slightly off track I know, I need to upgrade my version of photoshop and having seen this thread was wondering if Aperture is similar to Photoshop, I.e with layers and masks etc?
Or is it very much a stripped down version of PS

They are not the same thing at all really. Aperture and Lightroom are the same thing ie they hold all your images and allow you to do things like alter the colour balance, exposure etc whereas PS loads an image and allows you to alter that one image using more powerful tools. That is why Adobe have LR and PS.

you have to remember that the Lightroom 3 Beta is Beta software, so will have debug code etc in, production software should be better.

Before I upgraded my Lightroom 1 to Lightroom 2 I tried Aperture 2 and found I preferred Lightroom, I'll be doing the same again this time too.
 
They can actually compete with Lightroom 2 now! I might have to give Aperture another look. Was a bit miffed to see they've bumped the price by £60 or so though. Grrr...
