Hi, I use Aperture (not the latest version as I'm still on Snow Leopard), and most of my shots are from film. It's well known that film scans need a bit of extra sharpening, but I really don't seem to be having much luck with Aperture's edge sharpen feature. I just don't really know how to use it. It's especially tricky since there's inevitably grain in the images, and I don't want to make it more prominent, nor to end up with the sort of over-sharpened look you get from the high street labs (the scans from Photo Express or Peak look fine).

The second question on a related topic would be how to use the sharpening feature in the print dialogue? The manual is no help for either of these...

I have always used the sharpening in vuescan when I've scanned it in. Seems to produce reasonable results.

Intersting; someone told me the results were horendous so I haven't tried! But it doesn't seem to have many controls (Silverfast, for example, has a number of different sharpening approaches one can select, and IIRC allows some control over "strength" of sharpening).
