Just out of interest, has anyone here using AOL had any problems with their internet connection this weekend?

It worked OK on Friday night, then tried to use it on Saturday and couldn't connect through. All the connections were fine, and a message on the computer said "DSL connection is down". I tried again this morning and the same thing happened. However, I have just tried once more about an hour ago and this time connected through straight away. There's been no mention from AOL that they were going to shut down for whatever reason, so not sure what happened here. I dreaded having to call them as I think they still use Indian call centres.

Thanks.

Nope,

All been tickety boo here in Norfolk. (though i wasn't online much yesterday evening)

Thanks for your reply Lynton. Looks like it could be the modem playing up perhaps - not that I know much about computers, I regret to say.

Same here..........

I switch it on, and hopefully it works........

If it makes a jot of difference we have an AOL account 11 odd years) over a BT landline, and a netgear router that must be coming up to it's 5th or maybe later birthday....

This computer is plugged into it via the ethernet cable but 2 laptops and 2 phones use it wirelessly with no problems. (I've just now screwed that haven't I, saying that!)

Exchange is approx 1 mile from the house. Alledgedly upgraded to 24Mb. The fastest I have seen on test my broadband etc is about 11Mps, though whilst downloading stuff, struggle to see more than 1.5 Mb/s.

Hope that is of help.

That's great, thanks for your information.

I've had my account with AOL for about 5 years and never had any problems at all. I'm still using the original modem which is a Thomson Speed-Touch and the computer is connected into it with the ethernet cable as well. I don't use it wirelessly as it's permanently sat on the desk next to my PC anyway, but I had wondered how long these things last. Anyway, fingers crossed hopefully it will behave itself. If not, then it looks like another trip to Curry's. ;)

I've been pretty much online for most of the weekend (due to the rubbish drizzly weather) and it's been okay the whole time.

Lynton's set up is identical to mines, 11 years with AOL using a 5-years old negear router on a BT line via traditional overhead cable to my house (although my phone calls and line rental are covered by AOL). It's supposed to be a 24 mpbs service but only getting around 9 mb - with a following wind. :D

When I do get connection issues, I unplug the modem from the mains, and the modem cable from the BT wall socket, leave it for a minute and then plug the lot back in and it seems to do the trick - perhaps by "kicking it in touch"?

Ah the pre-empt the call centre, "I've already unplugged, replugged and rebooted....." - then they'll tell you the filter gets clogged (as in the bit that comes out of the wall and goes 1/2 to the phone and 1/2 to the interweb).... then we spend 15 mins discussing on exactly what it has filtered and how it has been clogged up....... (usually with a few "I am not being you the understandings")..... tell them that's crap and they'll escalate to Level 2, where someone will teach you how to get into the router and reset it..... usually 168.192.0.0 and admin / admin, but cannot remember much more than that......

Thanks to you as well Ian, much appreciated. As it happens, I did unplug it from the mains and the wall socket, although I did plug it back in straight away again without leaving it a while, so I'll certainly do this if it plays up again. There is also a reset button on the back of my modem which I tried but didn't have any effect.

I should have mentioned earlier that mine is also connected to the BT landline, although my phone calls are not covered by AOL so still paying BT for my line rental.

I only ever had to call AOL once when I first had it installed, and it wasn't a pleasant experience. It was only by sheer fortune that everything eventually started up.

I've been ok in Colchester too. I've had aol for 14 years!! Why I'm still with them goodness knows! It's flaky at best. I'm lucky if I get 1mb of download speed as apparently I'm ' too far from the exchange' (which is practically at the end of my road)
I just don't like change. I did dump their software some time back though, it's that that causes alot of the problems!

Thanks for your reply Tori. Yes, AOL's reputation does seem to be a bit "hit-and-miss", and I have read bad opinions about them admittedly, particularly when it comes to customer service. Like yourself, I'm reluctant to change unless I really have to - a case of "better the devil you know" I suppose.

I have had days where it has been very slow going from one website to another, but generally speaking I've always managed to start up without too much delay.....until this weekend, that is.

My apologies to the admin staff - I've only just remembered there's a section for computer issues, so please feel free to transfer this thread over if you so wish.

Thanks.

I've been with AOL for the past 10 years and the last few months have been a nightmare. Lots of dropped connections every few minutes or so (which lasts about a day) and then is fine for a week or two. I work from home and really not the quality of service I am paying for.......but it is a BT line at the end of the day I guess and AOL just rent it !

That's not very good I must admit. I have heard that Sky are one of the worst when it comes to broadband, but I don't really know which are the best ones unfortunately.

To all you AOL customers........... Enjoy the fun (not) when you try to cancel your contracts ;)
