I'm not just saying this to make you feel better, but I think they are SUPERB!
I love the white background, it makes the skin tones stand out.

All great shots mate, don't worry

I had a look at the gallery. The one entitled Princess has the levels out and was on the pale side. When I levelled it, the image seemed fine to me. In fact, she looked so healthy some people might have made the reverse observation. The image entitled Last 2 (I think) was fine on the levels. Your portraits are excellent whether in colour or B&W. No need to worry in my opinion.

Yep, no need to worry at all MD. One or two had a fair amount of the white background in them rather than tight crops but they work well composition wise. The white background looks pretty well exposed so I agree, not a problem as far as I can see .

Ok, I'm going against the crowd here but I do see some inconsistent results. Compare matty-white and matty-1-web and there's an obvious difference in the skin tones from shots I presume were taken in the same sitting.

Taken a sample RGB from the lightest areas of the subject's forehead in each shot reveals the difference.

matty-white is 232, 173, 149
matty-1-web is 233, 190, 175

In both I would say the WB was a little warm but more so in matty-white.

I'm no expert but they look fine to me apart from a couple of tweaks in levels/curves as has already been mentioned :)

I do think it would be nice to see a bit of variety in the choice of backdrop. Maybe a nice rich red or brown for some shots though of course colour can be a very personal thing. :)

Are you serious? They are beautifully done.

thanks for the comment.. i am trying to get the white studio look / style down to a finished product before i start playing around with other b/g's i have had a play with a dark b/g but i realise this is very similer to the white..

Presumably you're shooting raw. If you look at those files is the white balance set the same for both?

no i have been advised that shooting in a studio enviroment jpeg would be fine .

i will try some over the weekend in raw and have a look at them.

What WB setting did you use when you took them?

MD I can not see a problem I think you are getting cracking results.

As mentioned previous I would switch to Raw that way you have a safety blanket if required.

off memory..
it would have been

f/8
manual
iso 50
flash
focal lenth 90 ish
200th sec

does that mean you were shooting with flash or the WB was set to flash?

Ideally you want to set up your lights and then use a grey card to set the WB. Either register as the custom value in the camera if you're shooting jpg or use the shot as a reference for when you process the raw files. The important point here is to have a consistent value across all frames. If your lighting is constant then every shot should have the same value but it looks like each shot has been taken with a different WB and/or processed to set a new WB which has led to the variations you're getting in skin tone.

righto i now understand where your coming from....:bonk:

i have been shooting on flash. camera set to flash

but then tweaking all the shots in a slightly different way..

i will set the lights next time then take a custom white balance shot with the expo disc.

then set the custom wb ..

i take it this should be ok...

md:thumbs:

Yep, the key here is to be consistent with the WB so every shot is the same. It doesn't really matter if the WB is wrong, as long as it's wrong for all of them because then the same correction can be applied to every shot. But as soon as you start adjusting the WB on a per shot basis you can expect to see these kind of differences.

righto another problem sorted ... hopefully...

thanks very much for bearing with me...

hopefully i will lean and improve from it..

I think they are fine. Of course, if all the models are extremely well tanned, then yes they are a little white. They look accurate colours to me. I've had a lot worse published.
