Something I've never tried is to see if a dedicated flashgun would work on an old mechanical camera with just a centre terminal on the hot shoe, you only need to waste one or two shots. Well I can't see why it wont work if the dedicated flashgun can be set to manual and has the sensor to determine exposure, anyway my Canon 300tl wouldn't slide onto a Konica TC hotshoe as all the five pins wouldn't retract easily so I wasn't going to force it, but my three pin Minolta 360fx fitted easily and worked and will post the results when I get the film dev.

I use a Nikon SB-25 for exactly this - I put it in Auto mode, which uses the sensor at the front to determine correct exposure, and dial in the aperture and ISO that I am using into the flash. Accurate flash exposures, even when bouncing.

I use an old Nissin 18 with my olympus trip which has a table on the back for ISO 100 to 400 and various feet and appature settings

Ah! looks like you guys are well ahead of me and solved it ...going on from there I'm trying to mix and match my few dedicated flashguns to different makes of dedicated cameras, as I not going to buy a flashgun for every make of camera. So for example I might have a Konica FS1 loaded with film and suddenly want to use a camera for flash and have to load up a Canon or Minolta instead, well the matching Canon T70 flashgun fires on a FS1 also the pins are the same, but at the rate I use film it will probably be many months (or a year) to test every combo out :D

Perhaps this is one thread i should pay attention too

Could be handy if for example....... you have DSLr with separate flashgun or an advance film camera with matching flashgun, and just want to use an older film camera with just one centre pin on the hot shoe, well as long you don't have to force the flashgun onto the camera hotshoe it should be ok.....well as long as your super duper flashgun can be set for manual use.

So realistically it's not going to benifit me in the fact i have just one film camera stuck on auto, one DSLR no flash for either and no clue. i shall just read and maybe i will still learn something

Old schools flashes are so cool they can blow a persons eyebrows off !

Well I have an equivalent to the Pentax ME and is a Centon K100 and will take you Pentax bayonet lens..works perfectly and is all manual (well it still needs batteries for meter and shutter speeds)...I was going to send it to Asha for a five year loan, but postage would have been £18 for two cameras to France (as I was going to include a OM 20). Well you can have the Centon on a five year loan also, and postage would be about £3.90 that you could send in 2nd class stamps after you get it to save time. Also have instruction manual as well, but the camera is so simple you wont need it.

Thank you that is very very kind of you.... i think i can stretch to the £3.90 up front for postage, i can't have you out of pocket on my account... i am assuming then i can use any flash for film cameras then as it's the auto stuck thing that will cause my problems? do i really sound as clueless as i feel right now?)

Well I don't have a ME to answer your problem, and for £3.90 postage you could buy a flashgun (or a few £££s more).. If a member can say it is no problem using flash with the camera stuck on auto, it would be better to get a flash after Xmas.
Also the post office have increased there sizes for parcels maybe it's only £2.40 for postage, if so you might as well have it anyway.

Well then thank you that would be really great!:D

As for the flash/auto/ME i'll start a thread... see if it can work or worth getting the pentax looked at etc

Ok. will check with the post office tomorrow to see if the parcel fits for their £2.40 fee, and I wouldn't spend any money in having the ME repaired when you can have this camera.

Ok great just let me know and i will forward some to you!

Good news T..second class and by Royal mail is £2.60.....dumb me I should have asked for your address as I could have postage it today. Anyway the camera is so easy to use in that you just alter the aperture or shutter speed until the green diode lights up, and the meter is accurate so no excuses for unhappy shots :D :exit:

I have an unwanted flash that I received with a Yashica FRII if you are interested. I think it is a 'no name' brand :)
Anyway, it's compatible with film cameras of a certain age.

Very interested yes please... :D

On tv noticed last post is 18th dec for guaranteed :suspect: :suspect: del for xmass

I'm bemused whenever this thread comes up, as I don't know what AAMOI means!

As for the flash/auto/ME i'll start a thread...

Last night I gave away a Vivitar 3500 with a dedicated Pentax module which would have been perfect with an ME.

worth getting the pentax looked at etc

Is your ME not working? If not, I have one here which you can have for postage costs (it was given to me to find a good home for it).

Steve.

Typical! lol... well the ME works but only in Auto it doesn't move to the modes so i don't know if a flash will work on it

Well ive just confirmed that my 420ex doesn't fit on my pentax ME super , but oddly will fit (but not fire) on my OM10. My little halina has a cold shoe on which the 420 ex will sit - but there's no way of connecting the 420 to the halina's flash cord port.

its of only academic interest because ive got a non dedicated sunpak which will work on both the OM 10 and the pentax (but not the halina), and will also sit on a slave trigger to use as a second flash with my DSLR gear

Brian you really have me thinking! I have a raft of dedicated flashes for different systems that I really should use so this Christmas I am going to fire a few rolls off using a number of my neglected until now flashguns, indeed I am making this a Christmas project!

Nikon and OM20 (probably OM10 as well) are crafty baskets, as they have "awkward" positioning of a dedicated pin, but Ricoh, Yashica, Contax 139, Konica FS1 and Canon A and some T models have more promising location of the dedicated pins and some are the same...but whether one flashgun would work with all or some, I'll have to try and see the results.
The dedicated flash gun for a Canon T70 fires on a OM20 maybe on a OM2 as well but it would be another wait and see the results.

Ive got a set of younogo radio triggers - I might have to dig them out and see if they'll fire off any of the film bodies (the old ones I mean - I know they work on the eos 30 and 3 ) if they do I could probably use them to trigger virtually any flash for two OCF flash set ups

Well Adrian it would be interesting as I'm guessing you can mix and match dedicated flashguns...as long as they fit on the hot shoe and you don't select auto or program on the camera.

I use a pc sync cable with a yn minolta sony shoe adapter that has pc sync socket, and that works. :-) rf602 trigger

One advantage of old cameras is you can set up professional flashguns (not micky mouse) very cheaply.....for example:- a group shot about 20ft away and you want to be in the group, by using a long cable to fire the shutter and the other flash guns are set of remotely by light detectors that can be bought at boot sales for 50p.

Thanks Pete, like an idiot I did see that a moment after I posted.:bonk:

Keep us informed as to what you find out Adrian.

I've messed around a little bit with flashes................for eg, Using a dedicated Olympus flash both on an om-10 and a Pentax MX without problem.

Calculated exposure "manually" based on the Guide number of the flash gun..

Like other people, it's an area that i am very vague with and rather cautious with what I mix with what.

I have also "dry" fired a Nikon SB800 flash gun attached to the shoe of an ETRS grip..... all seems good.
Yet to try test shots on film but cannot see any reason why it won't work , again calculating the exposure based on the Guide Number.
