Looking for a tough weather/waterproof compact for my niece who is off travelling the world...said we would buy it her as a gift. She isn't a hobbyist photographer, just a casual user, but she needs pretty solid and weatherproof...AND easy to use. Decent picture quality is important.

After some consideration I ended up with these... Panasonic FT3 or ideally 4, or Olympus TG620 or ideally 820.

The lesser screen puts me off the Oly TG620, the Panasonic FT4 improves on the 3. However both these cameras are perhaps more than we hoped to spend...around £180 would have been better.

Read some reviews and tests, but does anyone have experience of any of these cameras or can throw anything else into the mix? Weatherproof is more important than waterproof.

I have a can d10, (blue & silver). It's great goes everywhere with me, wanted something I could through in my baby bag, to be prepared for all occasions, even my four yr old can use, and it with stands being covered in food, juice, sand etc

Thanks Leanne, looked at the D20 (D10 replacement) but was even more expensive. Will look at the D10.

I work predominantly outside (I'm a head ranger) and ive been using a fuji f10 as my pocket camera for 8 years without a problem - another benefit of this series for travelling is the high endurance batteries which can do 1600 shots on one charge.

they don't make the f10- anymore but i think you can still get its successor the f11.

I have the Panny FT3.. TBH the picture quality is not that great but I think it's the same challenges for most tough cameras because the lens cannot be made to extend. Instead you have a fixed front element and a folded lens design.

I think it's particularly prone to flare, contrast is not great etc.. lacks punch in the images for sure. The video mode is at least ok. Then again I'm spoiled by good cameras...

Thanks Vaizki, that's interesting...it's that extra protective glass over the lens... this had already got me thinking and you just confirmed what I had considered...

Thanks also BSM... a weather sealed camera is in my mind a more suitable alternative.

There is the TG-1 but it's hideously expensive and probably not THAT much better... :(

I have a pentax optio WG1 goes with me everywhere, should be within your budget too
