Looking for a bit of advice re: Qnap security.

I have tried several ways of changing the username and password of the Qnap but, whichever way I do it, I am still able to login using the default "admin" details.

I can not delete downloaded files saved to the Qnap when logged in via my new details but, have full access still with the admin details.

I need to set up just one username and password (for obvious reasons).

Been on the Qnap forum but, they're not very helpful on there.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Thanks Neil,

I have no problem resetting it, just getting rid of the "admin" login.

I'll drop them a ticket anyway, can't do any harm.

Thanks

I've reset the admin password and, can log in using both the new password and the old admin password, that's the problem I'm having, whatever I do, I can always log in using "admin" and "admin".

I've had a response from Qnap support so hopefully we'll get it resolved.

I'll update for the benefit of other if I get resolution.

Thanks for your time Neil.

I had a QNAP a while back. From what I recall you need to go into the users administration section and delete the original admin account ... once the new one is setup.

Thanks Duncan but, as Neil said, the admin account can't be deleted or disabled.

Hmmm. I guess if you were feeling adventurous you could Telnet to the box and use vipw to change the admin name in the password file to something unguessable. But it's ages since I fiddled on a UNIX/LINUX box so I could be talking out of my backside.

Any services etc. based on that account should use the account UID, so a name change should be harmless. Don't quote me on that though ... ;)

Maybe a bit off course, but I saw a Qnap storage system for the first time today; and the local administrator spoke very highly of it - he said they are surprisingly stable considering they are not as well known as many more major manufacturers units!
