Anyone used their iPad as a graphic/pen tablet?

I’ve been contemplating a pen tablet for a while such as one of the Wacoms, but I’m also thinking of updating my iPad so thought I could kill two birds with one stone.

I mainly use lightroom with the very occasional adjustment in photoshop (cloning or high pass filter) so whilst the iPad won’t be as flexible as a proper tablet will it be good enough? I’ve seen some videos using Astropad to control the iPad/LR and it looks good, but what do others think?

I use my Wacom Bamboo for bits and bobs in Lightroom.
I've been using them on and off for years - the small ones are very good and certainly not a poor relation to the pro versions.
I'd love a Cintiq but not the price :)

You could get a Intuos Draw small (S), white, refurbished product for £45 delivered from Wacom.
I bought one for my daughter - who enjoys drawing - it was like new, in a plain box.

You can also get them used quite often with people who didn't get on with them - that tells you something about using a tablet - it's not quite as easy as you might imagine.

Astropad looks cool - but it looks like you're stumping $30 for the app and need an iPad Pro with pencil ?
Of course if you want the hardware then the app is cheaper than just the Wacom :)

That’s the thing, my iPad’s old and ideally I could do with a faster one and one with more storage so I’ve been contemplating getting one anyway. I think you can use the standard iPad with astropad and it also works with a pen I think. If I was to use the iPad to replace the MacBook for editing then I would certainly look at a Pro, but for use as a pen tablet I think the iPad might suffice.

I only skimmed their site because I'm not a Mac or iPad user - I don't think my iPhone6 would cut it :)

Hopefully an Astropad user will be along to give you better help!

I use a small Wacom.

I also use an iPad with a stylus for drawing - but not for image processing. I can't imagine that it could be anything like precise enough for me.
Are you saying the Wacom is more accurate than the iPad?

Yes. That's no doubt in part due to the stylus. Maybe there are better ones than mine for the iPad.
I didn’t know you could use others apart from the apple one  :$

I've got a intuos cth-480, with wireless adapter, bought it and just can't get on with it.
If you want it let me know, it's free, with all the manuals etc

Thank you, that's an extremely kind offer. However, I did buy an iPad last week as I can use it with Logic Pro too so I'm going to use the iPad for LR and see how I get on. Thanks again.

You're welcome, it's not going any where so if you change your mind just let me know
