anyone used the tamron 28-75mm?

right, iv now got my 5d mkii and a 17-40f4l and have about 8-900 quid left over, i was looking at the 24-70 f2.8L but this would use all of the rest of my hard earned cash . i have been recomended a tamron 28-70 f2.8 and at 266 quid i suppose you cant complain.

has anyone used one, how sharp are they compared to L glass? and what are your throughts on this.

Is that a price for a new one Phill? I've been looking at the same lens for my Sony body and it's more like £366!
 
I used to have the Nikon 17-55 f2.8 which new is around £900, so guessing that is similarish to Canon equiv. I didnt use it that much so went for the Tamron 28-75 second hand (one with no motor in as that is quicker to AF).

While I found the build and the solidness of the Nikon better, the Tamron is a better weight, and IQ wise very little difference. Maybe wide open it is not quite as good, I took some pics using both lenses and it was hard to tell apart, in some cases the Tamron looked better! I would not hesitate in recommending one.
 
I use one on a 5D2 and its sharp with good IQ - better than my 17-40L including edge sharpness. got mine new from OneStop £266 inc

I have one on my Nikon D300 and wouldn't part with it ( until I can afford a Nikon 24-70mm 2.8!!!!) Rob
 
kev m- yeh they are 266 on onestop digital. i have bought a fair bit from them and if anything gets stuck in customs they will sort it all out and repay your import tax and orders normally arrive very quickly... spot on service i say :)

and sounds like its a worthwhile investment to me, cheers guys

That's a great price but the thing that puts me off buying an import is the caibration issue. If there's a problem with my A700 and it requires some adjustment then I can still ask the Tamron importer to do it but it'll cost me. If I buy a UK one they'll do it for free. £100 is a decent amount to save though.
 
Another Tamron fan-boy here, checking in :naughty:!

I use the 28-75mm f/2.8 on my D700 and the DX version (17-50mm f72.8) on my D90. Both of mine are motorised versions, although I don't have any major issues with the focus speed, personally :shrug:.

I have 'pro' glass either side of that focal range (Nikkor 17-35mm f/2.8, 70-200mm f/2.8 etc.), but I certainly don't feel as thought the Tamron is a 'step down' when I switch to that lens :|.

Sharpness and build quality are far better than they have any right to be, for a lens in the sub-400GBP category (IMHO).
 
I've had one for about 8 months, but I'm still not convinced by it.
 
I've had a 28-75mm on my D700 for some time now, we had a meet last year where Stuart from Digital Depot bought a few lenses to try out, i tried the Nikon 24-70mm 2.8 next to my Tamron, image wise i didn't see any difference, obviously the build quality and AF on the Nikon was faster, but then i would expect it to be for over double the price of the Tamron, you can normally pick up a Tamron for around £230ish used, bang for buck they don't come much better.
 
I had one, sold it on after a short while. It wasn't particularly sharp (I may have had a soft copy as there is a lot of love for this lens), my main issue with it was slow AF. Ended up buying a 24-70L to get the faster AF, image quality is not £500+ better than the Tamron though!
 
Was my favourite lens on the Sony a300
 
I had one when I used Sony bodies. It was soft wide open and not very impressive. Hrad to say if the AF problems I had were the lens or the body but I threw away too many shots. Again, though, as Julian says above there are lots of fans of this lens so we might have had duff copies.
 
Got one on my D700, image quality is incredibly good at all apertures. A real bargain, was only £180 off Ebay. AF speed is not the fastest, but for me it's not worth spending 5 times more to get that fast AF and extra bulk/weight to lug around.
 
Use this lens 95% of the time for studio use on 50D. Pin sharp Save your money and buy the Tamron.
 
had one, wish i hadnt sold it tbh!
 
Was considering one of these too but as always with 3rd party Tamrons and Sigma, you are either lucky or not, and few seem to be sharp wide open. Unanimously good or great once you are a couple of stops down.
