Hi all

The title says it all, just looking for any feedback about these two printers?

I have seen the sample packs and like what I have seen from both of them :)

However, as I PP 99% of the time in LR not PS I have found that not all the ICC profiles they have for softproofing are usable in LR and in the case of TPS the reason is that the Giclee profiles are CYMK not RGB.

I do intend to get some prints done but user feedback/experiences are always nice read about :D

Where the 101 giclee profiles RGB? I also have been putting off using TPS for that reason.

Hi

Thanks for looking and replying :)

I am awaiting clarification from P101 having found that the two of the Giclee profiles, Fotospeed PF Gloss and German Etching do not show in LR.

FWIW it was the Fotospeed Gloss that most caught my eye for some first prints, hence my hesitation and asking the TP community what their experiences were like???

For the record, though many folk like me now use LR for PP/workflow/output both the companies only talk about PS (or Aperture) and in the case of PS that can handle both RGB & CYMK profiles.......................just hope that where the profile is currently PS only they will see the sense of making a version asap that is usable in LR. As I 'read it' TPS were unable/unwilling to offer such RGB profiles....................directing me to C-type and/or using PS over LR

I did ask TPS about an RGB profile for photorag but they couldn't provide one. I'm guessing their using a rip driver not the stock epson one.

Edit. I do think as more people use LR only this will have to change. I have gimp but no photoshop.

Just downloaded the point 101 giclee profiles and they all seem to be RGB profiles with a perceptual rendering intent. They also all seem to show okay in LR4.

??? well the zip file showing as March 2013 set Giclee ones for me all installed but as mentioned of the 6 supplied the Fotospeed Gloss and German Etching did not show in LR4.3 for me :shrug:

Can you "see" those two as 'installed other" in LR?

The file I downloaded was March 2013. I unzipped this put it in the right folder (/Users/{user}/Library/ColorSync/ on my mac). I also put them into a subfolder called Point 101 Giclee Profiles just to help me identify them.

In Lightroom 4.3 I picked the image I want to print, went to develop and pressed S for softproof. In the drop down picked other, ticked all 6 and they all showed up in the menu.

I can't do that last step with some TPS profiles.

Hi

Well the devil may be in the detail, I am using Windows 7 Pro 64 bit. Though like you the TPS ones are AWOL because the evidence so far says they are CYMK and LR of any OS platform cannot see CYMK profiles.

I will tell P101 that I know of Mac user who can see all six Giclee profiles...............but why the heck W7 OS usage of LR cannot 'see' them to me is a complete mystery???

Got my point 101 paper samples today and have just been comparing them to the print space.

I really like the fotospeed Matt ultra paper. Nice and white super smooth but still super Matt. Also their pricing is nicer than TPS with included postage.

Sadly point 101s print quality is ropey. I can see the dots clearly and the definition is poor. The bold font they used even looks fuzzy up close.

My order will be going to the print space. I found out they use epson 9880 printers with genuine inks so the stock hanemule photorag profile will have to do for proofing then ill just send them a adobe RGB file.

Hi Chris,

I stumbled upon your thread here so I hope you don't mind if I add a response as I was in contact with box brownie via email some time ago about profiles and compatibility with Lightroom.

There was an issue with a small batch of the sample packs we sent out earlier this year and it might be that you received one of them, we resolved the issue with a couple of other clients and this sounds like the same problem.

In any case we now have a more complete sample pack that I would be happy to send out to you and box brownie (and anyone else on this thread free of charge) which includes A4 prints and wider variety of papers. I would also be happy to do a free A3 giclee print for you to try and show you the quality we can provide as I'm convinced you'll be happy with the results and we always look to please and give 100% satisfaction to all our customers.

Incidentally we're about to launch a whole new range of products.

Please feel free to visit our website with a reference to this and I can organise this for you.

Kind Regards,
Kerry

I might just have to take you up on that, I will send you a DM to see what I need to do.

For anyone following along: I got the new sample pack last week and it's 100x better and seems very good. I will be ordering the free test print when I can find an hour or so to proof the image.

Hi

I have finally had the time to check the icc profiles and LR5 NB these were the most current downloads August 2013.

All of the 6 Giclee profiles now show as available for soft proofing in LR5 (NB have yet to double check whether the same happens in LR4 ~ will do so edit this post soon) Edit ~ yes, LR4.4 also now shows all 6 profiles :)

NB the profiles are Fotospeed Gloss, Fotospeed Matt, Hahnemule German Etching & Photorag 308, Harman Gloss Baryta & Ilford Pearl.

Though I note on their website the says "The finest archival papers available" and then omits the Fotospeed Gloss and the German Etching ??? so why not those two as for sure the Fotospeed Gloss is more aimed at photographers than German Etching, is it not?

I will dropping Kerry an email re an up to date sample pack :)

Hi Laurence,

Many thanks for the update and I'm glad the profile update has sorted out the compatibility with Lightroom. With regard to the papers not listed on our giclee page - we are doing a big update to our website in the next few weeks that will incorporate a whole new range of papers, frame types and new products.

In the meantime you can still order these other papers types and frames not shown (example white or aluminium frame mouldings) just not through our website. We want to make sure that our upload system accurately portrays the products to give excellent ease of use and intuitive ordering.

I will respond to your email shortly with regard the sample pack.

Thanks!
