Anyone used the camranger before?

I think it may be a bit slow but I don't think that will matter to me because I want to use it for landscape shots at night. I shoot 99% of those shots 6-12 inches off the ground and the 5d mark III does not have the flip out screen for easy viewing. This would give me a nice clean view of what I need to see. I just want some feed back before I pay 300 bucks for it.
 
I have a Camranger and it does what it says, I haven't put it fully through its paces yet but plan to do so later in the year when I'm down near Dartmoor - it's certainly a great option for those whose eyes aren't what they were :)

Perhaps you can help me decide if it is what I am looking for.

I understand that you don't need an Internet connection on your ipad, is this correct?

What I want to use it for is when the back of the camera is too low for me to get down to see it. Does this sound like a good product for that?
 
The camranger creates a wifi 'hotspot' that you wirelessly connect the ipad to. The cam ranger app for the ipad (free download but requires the serial number you get with the camranger) then allows control of the camera.

There's no need for a separate internet connection or 3g as it works through the built in wifi of the ipad.

Yes, that would work fine ... or if you were standing back away from camera (within range).

I use a Camranger and can't fault it. My camera is mounted 26m above me on the top of the mast and it works fine all the time.

As others have said it creates it own ad-hoc WiFi network, and once the details are stored in your Ipad (or whatever device) they will connect to it automatically according to the device preferences.

The device and the Ipad comunicate directly with each other, so notning else needed.

Screen refresh rate does decline the further away the device is, but it's still perfectly acceptable for relatively still subjects from 26m away. Obviously not much good for motorsports. For what you want to use it for, it wouldn't be an issue.

I did have one issue with it once, in a studio set up. It fired the camera (Eos 600D), but the studio flashes, which were fired from a hot shoe wireless transmitter, didn't fire. Don't know why, and to be honest, never bothered trying to find out why.

Search for it on Facebook and there's more comments from users on there.

I'd say go for it, I don't think you'll be disapointed.

Thanks everyone. I guess I'm looking for something bad about it but can't find anything. It's 300 bucks so its not so cheap and I don't want to make a mistake. Now all I need to do is figure out a good way to attach my ipad to my tripod.

Go onto Amazon and search for 'ipad clamp' there are a whole host of products which will do the trick

Well thanks for all the help gentleman I ordered it last night and should be here in a few days. Looks like a really cool tool that not only will help me with the issue I was having but also open up some new avenues.

If you have a laptop you tether using USB.

HDMI output on a laptop is just that, output. They cannot receive signals.

My laptop has hdmi in as well as hdmi out. ;)
I know it's a moot point as the OP doesn't want to carry a laptop but felt it worth pointing out that some do offer that additional connectivity.

Well I got it and I have to say at this point I am not impressed at all. I know I need to use it more because I do not understand it fully at this point. I have a lot of unanswered questions at this point.

I got mine a couple of days ago and think its a great piece of kit. Can't wait to have a go at focus stacking.

I think its really a simple piece of kit to understand and to get to grips with. Any questions, just ask away :thumbs:

I really need more time with it I suppose. Is there a way to do exposure composition? I see the scale but the buttons around it do not seen to do anything.
