Please don't ban me! It's not my fault! The family are asking what I want for Christmas and I am struggling to come up with ideas (well, ideas that aren't too expensive).

I know you can make a snoot from straws, but has anyone got/used one of these speedlite snoots?

Worthwhile? Waste of money? If you got one as a pressie you'd be pleased, but you wouldn't buy it yourself when you can make one for 50p?

If you need it, buy it. Looks pro. What does it do? :D If you can make one yourself look as good, for MUCH MUCH MUCH cheaper, then why not?

Although i dont have one. To me, these sort of things are great inexpensive gifts. Not the sort of thing one would buy themselves, but as a gift, yeah why not.

Well, my understanding is that is makes the light more directional, like a spotlight. I am just starting to look at lighting though, so could be completely wrong. :D
 
I'm sure these work well enough but, the problem is unless you do a lot of portrait work and have other lights this is something your going to use once or twice and throw in a draw, you'd probably get more use out of something like maybe a bigger memory card/spare battery/battery grip/1DS4 etc etc.
I have a large holdall full of must have, cant live without, used once gadgets up the attic somewhere, I cringe when I think of the money I spent on it all.
 
You are indeed right :)

Just bought one last week for a shoot I'm doing mid Nov. Not had a chance to try it out yet severe lack of subjects here at home, stepdaughter is away for the weekend and I don't want to blind the dogs, the whippet is clumsy as it is!

What would the postage be on that? ...............I could recycle it for you, see I'm even environmentally friendly :D
 
IMO, it's ludicrously over priced and also extremely over sized piece of carp.

Snoots are indeed great directional light shaping tools that have a multitude of uses both in the studio as well as out on location, but you can achieve the precise same result from making them from pieces of cardboard, which is not only 95% more compact, it is disposable and inexpensive.

Even as a gift, I'd feel pretty guilty as 35 knicker can be spent better elsewhere :thumbs:

If the cosmetics of a piece of cardboard equipment is an issue, cover it in black gaffer. :thumbs:

I use playfoam that you can get from any art store and sticky back velcro. Total cost? The foam sheets are about 50p and the velcro roll about £3.99 but plenty left over for other shapes/attachments.

A honeycomb is a great idea however and hard to replicate cheaply. Luckily plenty cheap options exist.

Got any recommendations for 'useful' accessories. I'm quite into my flash at the mo and want to play more with lighting. Are things like speedlight mini beauty dishes any use?

Have been looking on this site here.

I have a stand, remote trigger, umbrella (shoot through and reflector), double sided reflector thingy...

It's either come up with some ideas or I'll be wearing spiderman pants and matching socks come the new year!

Gotta agree with Thomas. If you have absolutely every other light shaper known to man, then maybe...

If you want to get more in to lighting, and only have one light so far, maybe a second light? I think Flash In The Pan is going to have the cheap Yongnuo hot shoe flashes soon which should be around your budget. What about a background system?

Maybe a Honl speed/honey comb grid mate :shrug: I'd be chuffed with one of those, they are pricey for what they are and you can make them for pitance, but, it's a better bet IMO :thumbs:

Yep, I hoping to get a flash from Graham when they come in. Can't really get the family registering on here, to buy chrimbo pressies from some guy I recommend. Background sounds interesting though... and useful. Any recommendations?
 
Yes, they are just smaller and more compact.. the different cell sizes simply give you a larger spot of light so the higher the degree the bigger the area is lit..
