Hi,

With a trip to the highlands in the offing I'm thinking perhaps breakdown cover is in order, but AA etc seem quite expensive, so a little digging and my wife found Autiaid and wondered if anyone knew anything good/bad about them

Ta.

I'm with them but have never claimed

Used them for years but never claimed. I came across them via Martin Lewis website so kind of trusted that he would have checked them out.
You have to pay for your own recovery/repairs etc. Then claim it back afterwards so you need some form of payment with you when you travel, credit/debit etc.

Cheers guys - I was looking up reviews and they seem to be either 1 or 5 star... I guess its like any other insurance but looks a lot cheaper than than the standard services.

Hmn, just found startrescue.co.uk - getting good reviews - best add these to the subject title :)

With the as you're paying for the service whether you use it or not, with autoaid you pay when you need it and claim it back, I've used them before but they don't cover vans so I had to go back to the aa

I did make a claim with them, paid and refunded within a week

Been with Autoaid for 6 years, claimed once, they called a breakdown company just down the road and paid out within a week

The AA can be haggled with or look at quidco.

We pay about £150 a year for me and wife and it includes everything hotels car hire epic recovery.

Thats bloody good!
(Both of them)
I've been with tha RAC for years, and hardly every used them.
Maybe twice in the last 7 or 8 years.
I think I shall be swapping at the next renewal date!
Same service for 1/3 of the price.
Its a no brainer

Thanks for the heads up :)

Thanks again all - nice to hear a couple of first hand accounts of autoaid - still not 100% sure which way to jump though - pay in advance and claim vs six claims a year (with startrescue)

I'm getting my money's worth out of hte AA this year :(

@Cobra Next renewal date phone the RAC and haggle with them first.

My renewal came through at £110+ up from £96 last year (with a no call out bonus) and AA were doing new customers at £82 for same cover (and so were the RAC!) so my conversation was along the lines of "why should I stay with you, when I can get this?"

After a bit of a discussion I am still with the RAC for £80 this year for the same package (everything except homestart) :woot:

The mother in law was with the aa and for years she just paid her premium without question. When she was poorly recently and I was sorting her finances she received her annual aa quote and they were charging her over £150 for the same service they were charging new customers less than £100. After some negotiating she now pays around £70 for pretty much the same service.

Cheers Heather
IIRC I'm paying about £120 for the "Full Monty" Inc. "a no claims bonus"
I doubt that they'll get anywhere the above though ;)

Shame I'm not planning on AA or RAC - I may just flip a coin sometime this week and let you guys know if I have need to use them..

I just joined the nationwide building society, for £10 a month you get full breakdown cover (inc at home and Europe) along with world wide travel insurance, mobile phone insurance and extended warranties in electrical goods. For me it was a bit of a no brainier as I wanted breakdown cover and travel insurance. The rest is a bonus.

Covers the both me and the wife for any car we are in.

No experience with auto aid, but I've been with some of the other companies.

In my experience what it comes down to is this. The Aa and Rac are actually attempting a roadside repair. Many of the other "cheap" roadside assistance firms are effectively nothing more than recovery companies. They immediately send a low loader or the like to recover you to a garage of your choice or home.

Personally I prefer an actual roadside repair there and then. And only a recovery as the last resort.

My claim with Autoaid was an attempted repair but as the parts couldn't be obtained easily and within a reasonable time they relayed me home. Total cost was £230 which i paid by card on the phone on the journey home. Posted reciept to them Monday, recieved cheque Friday.
