Yes
I am going to sell a load of gear to get a 5D3. Not as a backup to my MkIV but to complement it.

Just wondered if anyone has used it for sports? If so 'what ya think?'

was thinking about one for indoor sport in poorly lit conditions.. but keep reading its slow to autofucus in bad light.. as in it hunts... kinda put me off..

for daytime sport ..I wouldnt see the point to be honest.. wouldnt be better than a 7d

Tony - any links for where you read about the focus. All I have read so far says how good it is in low light. Unless they just mean good high iso pics but not mentioned the focussing.

Tony

Just ordered one from Kerso so will give it a go in bad light and see how it performs - once I get used to the new menu system that is..

Now I had a better sell off a lot of other gear to pay for it...

£2659 with P&P.

I think I got the last one in stock but the website in the FAQ says new stock is arriving all the time so wont be long before more in stock.

Decided that I'd sell my 1D3 as I have a 1D4 and some lenses that I don't really use.

Yes it's an expensive body but I figured buy it now as I plan to keep the 1D4/5D3 combo for a long time.

I then have a decent 1D body for outdoor sports and a lighter camera with 'supposed' great AF for indoor stuff and when I just want a lighter body.

The reports I have been reading on Fred Miranda say it is great in low light. BUT not sure if anyone has really used it in anger in low light fast moving stuff.

I will get the kids to play some sports in the garden in low light and see how it holds up.

if you're registered on POTN check these photos tracking dragon flies.

I was using SPORT mode on a canon 10d when I joined POTN .. learnt a lot from there... then discovered TP where it isnt full of americans who think the world ends where the sea starts...

nice pics but not sport as you say... gonna stick with what i have... get a 1dx early next yr

Whilst I think the 5D3 is a great camera, for a working pro like yourself I would agree stick it out and get the 1Dx.

I could be wrong, but I think the 1dx and the 5d3 share the same AF system?

Almost. The 1Dx has some extra funky stuff to help with tracking.

Also the 5D3 is not a hammer nails in jobby i.e. just doesn't have the build of the 1D series and doesn't have the weather sealing.

In our weather if you need a body for outdoor sports and use it in all weathers then I wouldn't even consider a non 1D body.

I have the 1D4 for outdoor in all weathers sport. I got it for a lighter indoors or outdoors in good weather body.

Now you have had it for a month Robin, Waht do you think about the 5D3 for sport? Have you got any low light examples you could post ? (IS0 3200 2.8 @1/500SEC or similar )

Sorry Tug - I thought I'd replied on my phone.

Anyway apologies I just haven't had anything sports wise to photograph in low light.

I should have done the trampolining with it that I did a few weeks ago.

covered a triathlon with mine a few weeks back, was spot on - better than my 7d i'd say

:) Post your thoughts when you get a feel for it fella. Cheers

Hi Drew, Thanks for the info...Keep the thread going when you use it in low light.

Yep will do.

Only had mine for two weeks now and was at Hopetoun House Horse trials on saturday and definitely better than my 7d , the Af and the image quality are amazing. :)

Tug

Went to son's rugby practise tonight with the 5D3 & old 300/2.8 non IS.

Here are a couple of non action shots after noise reduction & with sharpening. They looked really soft and noisy on-screen.

I think I need to do MA experiments with this lens & try again...

Sorry about the watermark. I've taken it off on Zenfolio but it is still showing on some of them :bonk:

Tracking wise when they were doing line-out practise and running I was pretty impressed

These are at 300mm & I reckon I'll need to try next with the 1.4x.

I know it was 'only' ISO 4000 but I have just printed at 9 x 6 the 2nd photo of the rugby ones & it looks fab.

And the moral of the story is "don't pixel peep". Look at a photo from the right distance and/or size and you will be happy.

:plusone:

Always plenty of "Willy waving" when a new model comes out :naughty:
