So does anyone use both a laptop and desktop for anything photography related? If so, what for?

Hi Ben.

I use a laptop if I want to shoot in 'tethered' mode with Canon software. It is also loaded with Photoshop CS3 and Lightroom 2 for processing, (since buying a 5DMkII it has become a touch slow with the file sizes as CS3 dosen't support the relevant RAW file). Tiffs are ridiculously large at around 120mb.

I also have an imac with Aperture for general processing - the odd time I need photoshop I use the CF cards to transfer files.

Yep, A windows Laptop, Windows desktop and an Imac.

Laptop for quick LR edits for other people or just to see what it'll look like. PC for full LR edits, cataloguing and Photoshop and iMac sometimes for certain Photoshop plugins but not often now.

I use a laptop and desktop, but don't really use the laptop for anything photography (it's only a netbook with 1GB RAM and windows XP), so lightroom takes ages to work its magic). I use it mainly for college/university work (can use it on busses and out and about) and programming (again, portability is key). I do 99% of my processing on my desktop

I use both, MacBook for backing up images when away from home and for quick editing etc and iMac for full editing and heavy work.

Thanks for the responses everyone. It's just I have a laptop, desktop and was think about making a custom build to use instead of my current desktop. I think after some research though I might try and upgrade my desktop a bit. As it seems a waste to just stop using it, 'try' and sell parts or make use of bits.

Upgrading a current desktop isn't too bad. Cheaper than buying a new one, certainly.

I use a macbook for laptop ad have a custom spec desktop pc. The pc blows the macbook away interms of performance, use a laptop for being out and about but your main machine should be always backed up and in good condition and well servjced, dont get roped into the imac world its not that great. My pc blows a mac apart

Netbook for backing up, previews and tethering while travelling, desktop for full editing :)

I do laptop for travelling and storing/processing images from the cards if it is a long day and desktop at home for storage/photo processing.

Netbook for dumping cards while away, along with very basic editing / reviewing. Desktop for editing / cataloging images when I get back.

I used to use laptop for everything but then bought a desktop to do the main processing. Now I use laptop for dumping files while traveling, processing holiday snaps, and also storing processed images as jpegs..

Pretty much as the others, laptop for dumping files when out in the road and basic edits. Desktop i7 power house for all lightroom and PhotoShop processing.

Laptop is about to be replaced by an iPad though.

just curious, can you still dump files into ipad and then transfer to your pc?

Desktop for everything if possible - business and personal - and laptop for travel if necessary. I dislike them.

MacBook for when I am travelling and iMac for everything else ;)

Ditto.

Although with the new Apple 27" Thunderbolt monitor, next time I might just go for a laptop and the next screen which is pretty much a docking station...

I did look at using the iPad, but the Photosmith app to sync with Lightroom didn't seem quite mature enough just yet.

I run exclusively on my 2008 13" Macbook, which is only just about starting to show it's age, could do with a RAM upgrade.

I will probably replace it with a 15" MBP in a year or so as well. I like the ability to just sit in the kitchen with the TV while I edit, rather than feeling I have to go hide away to do it which just mean it won't get done!

Granted the screen is probably crap and it's certainly a bit small but results seem to come out okay.

I use my PC for most of my cataloguing and editing and my laptop for when i'm away from home just want to make a few quick edits whilst watching TV or something.

I use an HP G72 laptop (i3/W7/64bit/4GB RAM) and Heinz 57 desktop (AMD Athlon/W7/32bit/3GB RAM). The laptop is used for tethered shooting, showing images after a portrait shoot and for storing images when I'm away from home. When at home the desktop is used for all image editing, storage and backups.

Both machines have ViewNX2, Capture NX2, Elements 9, LR3 and Photoshop CS5 Extended installed and both monitors are calibrated. I also have an external monitor I use when shooting portraits and at sports events.
