Anyone understand ebay/paypal and know Canon cameras??

Possible scenarios.

- acquired as part of a house clearance and seller hasn't noticed its a Mk. II
- impounded by bailiffs as part of a dept.
- stolen goods
- non existent goods, priced cheaply with no intention to supply

You see adverts all over the place. Gumtree is full of dodgy adverts that sound too good to be true. Ebay own Gumtree.

Personally, if the seller wouldn't entertain cash on collection for something like this then I would not take the risk. Whilst there is a certain level of protection with Paypal on Ebay, its the time it takes to clear up the mess afterwards.

No pics of the actual item on the auction either.... oh dear, oh dear.....

Why would a `legit` 5D Mk11 in excellent condition not be a bargain at £800?

:shake:

Ask yourself, do you honestly think someone would sell a £2k camera for £800, when they normally go for £1600 secondhand?

At best you're paying the going rate for a 5D, at worst........

no offence to the OP, but what is the point in posting on the forum and asking for peoples opinions when you are not willing to accept it? Surely you are sitting on the fence as deep inside you know that its too dodgy to risk, but you would like some comfort and reassurance that its legit from the forum members. It's not our money, so go for it! If it turns up, ill happily pay you £1200 for it

i know numerous people who have been scammed by this sort of deal, the seller builds up a feedback score selling low ticket items to the point where paypal trust them and don't with hold the funds for 21 days, then they start advertising the expensive gear like cameras, ipods, laptops only to send bricks in the post and disappear.

Can't find it on ebay, But ask yourself why would a honest seller refuse a person with almost £800 cash knocking his door? pm auction no plz. Alan

Probably stolen goods (as was the iPOd etc. I'd guess).
If you take the risk and a fully functioning 5DMkII body gets delivered, then it's the bargain of the year.
If you take the risk but it doesn't turn up, or is in fact a MkI, then you're protected by PayPal.
If you take the risk and it turns up but is faulty....then you really might have a problem. not sure where PayPal stand on this.

Personally, I'd leave it and keep looking elsewhere...there's a nice sales/trade forum right here ;)

I guess if a Mk1 turns up - it was advertised as so? So not sure if Paypal would do anything.. Yes - there's a mention to video recording - but it was sold as a Mk1 - and if you got a Mk1 - Paypal would probably say there you go then.

If it doesn't work out and you get a mk1 instead of mk2, I will do you a swap for my 23mp 450d :D

I have PM`s frfom seller confirming it is a Mk2
which I assume ebay/paypal would have access to.

It's not described in the listing as a MKII and that's what counts. The fact that the seller didn't appear to know the difference should be waving a huge red flag in your general direction ;)

I guess you need to await his replies to decide whether or not to proceed.. Plenty of views on this - and I'm sure you're considering the best option to take - just ensure greed doesn't take over your emotions - and I'm sure you'll reach the best decision on the information you have available. As many here have said - I'd not do it - but wish you luck if you do.

Lucky/greedy/stupid/naive. Cost you £800 to find out which. Good luck.

Yes it does, which is why the money is still in my bank and not his.

I have asked in the last PM for him to confirm that `5D` and `Mk11` are actually on the front of the camera. If he confirms this and in the `unlikely` event I go ahead, and something else arrives, I would hope that the information sent by PM would outweigh what was on the original listing.

Have you requested the seller's contact details from Ebay? Might be worth giving them a phone call and see what who answers the phone....

Just had a thought - if stolen, with no box, leads etc - wonder if it actually has its body cap fitted? Be a right dud if its been stored without protection, and is now full of dust...

You know.....He could just say yes it does .

yes, there is no way I would go ahead unless it had at least a battery/charger with it.

Where have I said I am not going to take the advice offered?

no, but you have an uncanny habit of refuting every bit of advice others have given you with an anecdote of your own. which in my books is the same thing.

Would have to disagree with your assesment, but if that`s how you read it, that`s ok.

Thanks for all the replies.

Might as well call it a day and save some bandwidth :)

Most replies confirmed my initial instincts. Still no reply from seller, IF he comes up with a convincing enough story (which I doubt), then I may go ahead, but only by cash on collection.

Thanks again.

HI , A few weeks ago ebay was fined for selling items on its site that were stolen ,also you will be covered by paypal if its stolen / wrong goods etc or not as described ,i was victim of a scam and i did get a refund from paypal but it can take a while .
good luck

the sellers ebay name refers to a womans cloths shop jane norman so unless your dealing with a cross dresser your seller is
1 female
2 selling this for her boyfriend the same as she sold his x box
also knowing the area it sounds stolen to me

hi,i had the camera listed elsewhere and the camera
has been sold to him, i hope you find another
shortly,thankyou for your time.

what a load of rubbish
report him to EBAY so they investigate
you didn't pay up quickly due to your reservations about using paypal and the possibility of receiving incorrect items or stolen goods.
reasonable, then he pulled out after already confirming the transaction.
so you were slow, but he can't advertise the goods elsewhere and sell them before you complete.

DODGY AS......report him..i'm just glad this didn't cost you any money

Why not take a look at this item 290358970575

5D Mark II Refurb from Canon Outlet.

At least you know where this one is coming from

Thanks, I was only actually looking for a 5D.

I was amazed when I did a search on these and found that some had sold for over £2000 (body only). Why would anyone pay more for a refurb than new?

Not checked new, are they in short supply?

Yea gods how many faulty items do canon get returned to refurbish and not very well judging by the negative feedbacks.
