Hi,
Bit of a long shot but has anyone tried this combination - Canon R7 + EF-EOS R Mount Adapter + Canon 1.4x III extender + EF 400mm f4 DO Mark I. Not conventional but it’s what I’m thinking of due to cost, weight, transportation. For wildlife in UK and Europe.

Not that exact combo but I’ve had good results with the R7, EF converter, 1.4xii and a 300/f4 so I’d expect your combo to work perfectly well. In general a lens+teleconverter combo that barely works on an EF camera will actually work better on an RF one in my experience as the RF cameras are more capable of autofocussing well beyond the f8 limit of an EF body.

EF 400mm f4 DO Mark I . . . the only 'weak' link.

Could you expand? I know it’s a divisive lens (sharpness, lack of contrast) amongst users but I’ve rented one previously and it performs well at f5.6. I’d be predominately shooting at that aperture due to the 1.4x extender.

At f/5.6 due to a 1.4x extender, the lens would still be wide open, so perhaps the ‘issues’ will still be present?

If you already have the lens, it’s clearly worth having a go. If not, maybe there are other options to consider.

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately my budget doesn’t run to any of the Canon mark II telephoto primes, which all have superior IQ.

This is a great resource, it shows how sharp lenses are and lenses can be compared to each other . . . I based my lens purchase on these results - Quick and easy to use too.
