I need to return a Canon 70-200 F2.8L to Onestop Digital as when zooming in then out there is a clicking sound, and I'm sure I can see some gouges right down inside the lens on the inside edge of one of the tubes.

Onestop have said to make sure I fill out the right customs info so I don't get charged. Is this basically the same way they fill their customs form in, to state the item as 'repaired lens'?

I want a quick turn around, does anyone know how much it's going to cost to send the lens back via a priority service?

Thanks

I would just put warranty return.

tarmac_chaser, that seems to be quite a common occurance with the 100-400 - something to do with the guides breaking up from what I can make out from posts on other forums. Why not simply send it to Canon UK for a warrenty repair rather than send it back to HK? Is that possible? I'm sure it would be both cheaper and quicker.

Don't think the warrenty is valid in the UK for a UK repair, you have to send it back to HK.

I think One Stop Digital will just send a replacement new one though.

Oops :thinking: just realised we're talking about the 70-200mm here and not the 100-400mm. It's photostar's fault for getting me all envious over her ordering her 100-400mm. But anyway, tarmac-chaser, it still might be an idea to send your 70-200mm to Canon UK rather than back to HK

they'll charge him for the repair then, i'm currently having a lens repaired by sigma at a cost of £75 so I would imagine canon would be dearer

Ah... our posts crossed 8utters. I've just read the Onestop FAQ's and you're right, it does seem as though it will have to go back.

Thanks for the input so far.

I tried out another 70-200 F2.8 in a shop today, and whilst the zoom felt the same as mine, the noise was minimal. It's annoying really as it seems the only problem (as far as I can tell) is just the fact the zoom is making a noisy click when zooming in then out.

8utters is right, there's only a 6 month Hong Kong warranty on this lens so it will have to go back. I don't really want to send it back but the noise it develop into something worse down the line. I'm guessing I'll be without it for a couple of weeks easy

How are you going to post it back, i've just had a look on the RM website, airsure will be roughly £30 if you keep it under 2kg but has a maximum compensation of £500

don't onestop pay for the postage back?

The problem with RM is their only insured service is airsure which only has a maximum compensation of £500

Onestop have just asked me to use their Fedex account number to send the lens back minus box, lens hood and lens case. I'm not sure what customs forms I need to fill in and how to attach them to the package.

They've also said I will be responsibility for shipping costs if it turns out not to be faulty, but I don't feel comfortable sending it back with such minimal protection!

Oh I dunno.

ring, ring.....ring ring....
Hello, royal mail.
Hi, You've broken my lens in transit.
Oops! Sorry Sir. Where do we send the £500?

If you send it like that you won't have any insurance anyway, if it's damaged in transit the first question they'll ask is was it posted with it's original packaging, this is the nightmare scenario that stops me ordering from Hong Kong

I don't understand why they asked me to send it like that. Their site states

'Product can only be returned if in original manufacturer's packaging, same condition as sold, with all documentation and blank warranty cards (if any). Please do not place stickers or shipping labels on the original manufacturer's package. For your own protection, insure the package and ship via a trackable method. Onestop Digital is not responsible for lost or damaged packages. Please also note that we will not be responsible for the return postage to Hong Kong, however we will ship a replacement or repaired product at our cost.

I wish I'd gone with Kerso now

I've just read something on the RM website that has quite frankly shocked me, i've sold quite a few items over the years that have been posted abroad, then I spot this.

Where they apply, compensation amounts depend on the service and the extent of loss or damage to your item.

If an item is lost or damaged beyond repair, we‘ll pay the replacement value – up to the value of the compensation for the service you‘ve used.

We only offer compensation for delivery delays when a guaranteed, timed delivery service, like Special Delivery, has been used. (Please note that we do not guarantee when Recorded Delivery items will be delivered, only that they will be signed for upon delivery.)

If an item is damaged and can be repaired, we’ll pay for the full cost – up to the value of the compensation for the service you’ve used.

You can increase the level of compensation you’re entitled to through our enhanced compensation schemes, designed to give you the greatest choice, flexibility and peace of mind.

We are not liable for loss or damage incurred outside the United Kingdom, where postal and delivery services of other countries are involved.

Compensation is available with some letter and most parcel services from Royal Mail. It‘s only payable when a delay, loss or damage is Royal Mail’s fault, but not in the case of circumstances beyond our control such as fire, flood, explosion, adverse weather and traffic congestion.

Certain items are completely excluded from our compensation service. For details please ask at your local Post Office branch.

Further compensation restrictions may apply.

A word of warning folks,I think you'll find that Canon UK, and most importers will only honour warranty's on equipment they have imported not what they consider "grey imports" that's one of the dangers of buying equipment from abroad. I used to handle all the repairs for a group of ten photographic shops, and found that many importers wouldn't repair the stuff even if the customer paid, so what may look cheap on the face of it can work out not to be,
