I'm heading back to Tanzania in Feb and fancy something new to take with me, last time I was there in Jan this year I took 2 x D800 bodies and my D4s................never again :( . In January I used my D800 with 600mm f4 95% of the time, and the other 10% was with 300mm and 70/200.
When I go in Feb I plan to take (maybe a new D5) with my 600mm attached plus another camera for animal scapes and people.
I am interested to hear about what you guys think about the new D5 and is the upgrade from D4s worth it??

"Worth it?" That's a bit too individual of a qualification... My take on the D5 after several months...

Faster/more accurate AF... but really only notable in *very* demanding situations.
Same ISO noise as D4/s... but with a 50% increase in resolution.
Lower DR/Color/Tonality at lower ISO's... not a problem if you get the exposure right, but there's not the same ability to recover shadows/etc.

Personally, I think the D5 is a pretty specialized camera best for low light/high ISO (≥ 6400) and very demanding situations (AF). If either of those are not primary factors, then there are better choices IMO.
TBF, the D5 is kind of a compromise camera if you can only take one... You get a bump in resolution compared to D4/s. Or you loose resolution and get an increase in high iso capability compared to a D8xx. In both cases you gain AF performance, but you might not notice/need it. And in both cases there is the cost of low ISO performance, which will only be problematic with heavy post requirements.

BTW, I'm (still/currently) of the opinion that there is little/no benefit to recording raw files w/ the D5... maybe for large WB error corrections... and there is actually a negative to it, the jpegs handle noise better than you can in post (no idea how/why).

Thanks Steven.........appreciate it mate.

If it were me, for a single camera on Safari I would be inclined to take the D810.
Or, if light weight and versatility are key, the D500 w/ the 200-500... you could get both for a lot less than the price of a D5.

In January I had my 600mm on my wifes D810 300mm f2.8 on the D4s, and 70/200 on the other D800 series, it was just to much gear to drag around. I have now issue taking the 600m f4, its the latest model and really not that heavy, I'm just not 100% sure about the MP of the D5 compared to the D810 where we are spoilt.............I was in the camp for wishing for a 36MP D5 when the rumors first came out.
My other camera I'm taking is a Leica S-007 with a 120mm lens for landscape and people and as you know that's got heaps of MP.
In Malaysia the D5 is equivalent to 4600 quid, not sure what the D4s second hand market is like though ??

When shooting birds in flight for example, on my D4s I used the AF group function to help nail the focus. I saw an article yesterday where the guy used the 3D tracking system of the D5 and it seemed to work really well.........have you tried the 3D AF function, and if so how do you rate it??

I haven't used 3D yet... I never liked it before so I'm not really sure where it would work well. Since it uses color/contrast I have to assume it will be best with a pretty clean BG.
I have used auto as a kind of "pray and spray" choice when trying to photograph swifts in flight at 800mm (hard to even keep them in the frame). It worked much better than any other previous attempt.
