I have an entry level Nikon D3100 with 3 lenses and I really want to get the best out of it. My 50mm prime has driven me to madness so I really need a guide....I just don't have a clue!!!! You'll need patience as I know nothing about DSLR's! I don't mind paying btw...as long as it's not outrageous!!!

I am new to DSLR as well and found reading understanding exposure 3rd edition a good starting point.

I think your 50mm is particularly tricky because it will only work in manual focus on that camera. What other lenses do you have?

I have the Nikon 18-55 freebie that comes with it. I also have a Tamron 70-300. You are correct about the 50mm though! Tricky for a newbie

Depends what you're trying to take pictures of...

Which 50mm do you have?
Nikon 50mm f/1.8 D AF Lens <-i've got this one.
Nikon 50mm f1.4 D AF
Nikon AF-S 50mm f1.4G

The 50mm needs the focusing to be spot-on when wide open. Set your camera on Aperture (A) and try taking pics at various aperture settings.
Will give you an idea about what the aperture setting does to the background apologies if you know all about this stuff.
