While visiting our Cambridge office on Monday I noticed that there's an airshow on this weekend. As I have a 1.4x convertor for my 300 coming this week I thought I might pop over on Saturday to have a go at getting some shots there.

Anyone got any tips for settings exposure wise? Every time I try to take a photo of something in the sky I end up with everything washed out, or the sky so bright it dominates the image etc.

Also anyone else going?

Pete

I am trying to get there for Sunday. Playing rugby on Saturday so cant make it that day.

Will let you know.

Dan.

Not sure what time I'll be there, but not too late.

I'm worried about exposure though.

Shoot aperture priority at f8, iso100, +0.7ev. Or shutter priority 1.320, iso 100 +0.7ev.

If your feeling brave shoot manual. You will get the best results. Start at f8, iso 100, 1.500 shutter speed.

Dan.

Pete, get there as early as possible mate. We normally get there around 7.30 and only just manage to get a place on the flightline. After youve got your pitch, you can walk round and check out the statics and various museums. Bloody long day though.
I love Duxford me.
Dean:)

I've been learning my tog skills at Duxford this year (handy as it's local), despite a bit research I've made lots of newbie errors but a few tips I've found (these work for me anyway):

Shoot RAW if you can & check the histogram. I didn't on my first trip and lost a few shots as a result.

I'd read that spot or centre weighted was best for aircraft but I've found that matrix metering gives a much better result. I really *hate* that Lancaster though, it's so dark I tend to either get no shadow detail or a washed out sky.

I don't get a lower ISO than 200, so I tend to use that with shutter priority, +0.7ev and 1/200 or 1/250. I get a *lot* of rejects panning at that speed so this weekend I might reduce that a bit but I prefer the prop blur at those settings (you definitely don't want faster than 1/400).

Don't forget continuous AF, I forgot my first time and wasted a ton of shots :bonk:

Lastly, on the Saturday the Red Arrows are doing their bit at noon instead of with the rest of the show that starts at 2.

Forgive my ignorance but what do you mean by getting your pitch? I assumed these things just had barriers all round and you just stood where-ever there was space? Presumably if you leave the space someone else stands there

Keep going with the tips though guys, most appreciated. I guess the best thing is to take a few shots and adjust the compensation to suit by the sound of it.

Bring 2 chairs and cable tie them to the barrier. This ensures you get a good spot and nobody is standing in front of you.

Pretty much.

Its very much a free for all. Some people just use step ladders and stand behind everyone. I even saw someone bring their own stand. It was like a 4 ladders welded together with a platform on top. I simply sont understand it becasue the planes a 250-300 feet high and you see them perfectly fine.

I remember him Dan, he looked like he was the umpire at Wimbledon:lol:
